I'm confused. The Kelvy ad talks about "saving hot sudsy" water, but also says "no hot water system" needed? Did it have a heater plus suds saver?

Thats right

Thats an Australian POD, and back in the 50's and early 60's over here, hot water was a very limited resource. Most houses would've had a very limited supply. My grandparents at that stage didnt have running hot water. There was a storage tank on the wood stove which provided hot water in the kitchen. In the bathroom there was a copper in the wash house outside the bathroom window, and they would bucket the water in.

The solution was to mount a 2400watt 10amp element under the washbowl, and bolt 2 or 3 thermostats to outside of the washtub.

Sequence for the first load would then be as follows:

Fill
Heat (Could take 2 hours)
Wash
Save suds
Spin
Rinse
Spin

The second load would then go as follows:

Return suds
Fill
Heat (would be quicker this time)
Wash
Save suds
Spin
Rinse
Spin

As a rule, the maximum temp these would heat to was about 60deg C.

The wringers, twintubs and semi auto's could heat to boiling if you wanted.

Nathan, I saw that 218 gns?? What are those units?

right now I want you to know I am washing with SARD + DUOmatic in my 1962 GE Combo! But my all time fav right now is OmoMatic!!! What a detergent!

I was told about the SARD ad , the fisherman's wife but I would LOVE To see that video????

Guineas

Hi Jon,

A Guinea was one pound one shilling.
1 Pound was worth about $2 in 1966 when we decimilized
1 Shilling was worth about 10c.

So in theory 218 Guineas was $457approx in 1966 AUD.

In those days you could by a car for about $1600 or a house for about $10,000. So $500 was a lot of money.

With inflation etc that 218 Guineas is about $4600 in todays money.

My favorite detergent in AU is Radiant Matic atm, I've tried OmoMatic, but it seems to generate oodles of suds Not to mention the fact, that if you buy the non conentrated version, you're supposed to pour 2 cups worth in. (I dont think my Miele dispenser can hold that much powder. )

I use Sard as a laundry booster as well, although now I've got a washer with a builtin heater, I find its not as necessary as it used to be.

Very Interesting Nathan

I find the Omo to be a super low sudser in my Kenmore Combo which is VERY suds sensitive. I wonder if the water has anyhting to do with it, we have soft water here in New England but it might not be as soft as your water there.

I'll have to get the relations to ship over some RadiantMatic next. ohh they hate me for that , detergent is sooo heavy it costs a fortune to send. I also make them send me Foster Clarks custard mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I understand that custard is a rarity in the US, or at least in the powdered variety?
