Hello everyone, it has been 400 days since my last post and I finally did as someone suggested... i moved the washing machine and removed the back panel to take a closer look and whats going on inside.

Model number: GW973KT119. General Electric, Camco Inc (made in canada). It is one of those big boxy beige machines with that filter-flo trap on top of the agitator.

The issue:
Between the water inlet and the tub, there is a plastic container where water runs through. The back of this plastic container is unenclosed. Running the cold water, such as on the final rinse cycle, results in water escaping from the unenclosed section of the plastic container and landing on the floor, resulting in a leak.

Despite the water supply's valve being opened, the cold water does not have as much force/pressure as the hot water. I suspect that the low pressure of the cold water results in some backing up of the water. This backed up water ultimately gets pushed out of the plastic container's unenclosed area. This is what I have concluded - does it seem about right?

- What is the purpose of this plastic container? I feel as though I can just retube the area to bypass it completely.

- Why does the cold water run so low/have a lack of pressure - is this a symptom of the water supply valve or something to do with the washing machine?

Attachments:
1. An image of the location of the plastic container.

2. A video of the plastic container during cold water rinse cycle - note that the machine makes a buzzing noise when it uses the cold water. I also put a black piece of styrofoam to elevate the rear portion to minimize backflow/leaking. Turn on volume by pressing speaker button on top right corner of video screen.

Leaking GE, Filter Flow washer

That little plastic box is the inlet air gap, they can get a mineral buildup inside them, which makes the water spray sideways and leak, you can remove it and clean it carefully even soak it in vinegar, etc.

If it takes more than four or five minutes to fill the tub completely with cold water, your inlet water valve is worn out, replace the valve assembly that will solve the slow filling of cold water.

John.

Check any strainers in the fill hoses - where the hose screws to the tap, and where it connects to the washing machine - inside the screw fitting on the fill valve. If the little strainer screens get blocked, you get a slow fill.

The inlet valve often has a fine plastic filter with a little plastic tab in the centre, you can grip the plastic tab with pliers to pull the strainer straight out and clean it. (Generic info for all washing machines, I don't know if it applies to your GE or not.) When clean, the plastic filter presses right back in.

Hi John, based on your message, the inlet water valve may indeed be blown. It takes a very long time for the tub to fill with cold water, it is like nothing is coming out.

Are inlet water valves universal? Where is a good place to buy them? amazon?
Should i place the washing machine on its front side when replacing the valve?
I attached some photos of the inlet valve.

Cleaning inlet valve screens

It should not be necessary to remove the screens to clean them. In fact, you should not remove them if they’re metal.

Just remove the cold water, inlet hose, and if the screen looks really gunky, scrape it gently and just squirt a little water on it to rinse it away

It’s very unlikely that this is the cause of the problem. It’s far more likely that the valve is simply worn out.

John.

Hi John, I guess i should replace the valve. Based on the photos that i have attached, do you know what type of valve I need? can i just order any GE washing machine valve?

I am googling GE washing valves and most of them seem do not have that metal bracket that is used to screw the valve onto the side of the machine. however, i did find the WH13X10014 and that does have a metal bracket - is this therefore the right valve? i attached a photo of the valve as well
