Came across this, thought it was funny. Not sure how true it is, they claim almost all pop song consist of the same 4 chords, but it was good for a laugh on a crappy day....

Australian comedy group 'Axis Of Awesome' perform a sketch from the 2009 Melbourne International Comedy Festival...

.

I don't know how true this is, either, but I remember one classical repertoire nut making this sort of comment years back in some letter to the editor. Except, he was lot harsher, even going as far as to claim that the average popular guitar player only knew 2, 3 chords, and when a new chord was needed, his group would have to hire a new guitar player.

On a more serious note (no pun intended!), it's always amazed me how much a really good musician can do even when seriously limited.

A somewhat similar video: a former cello player who is haunted by Pachebel's Canon--which he hates--and which keeps coming to life even in more modern music.

Those of us who deal with playing The Canon regularly call it the Taco Bell Canon. People want it for both weddings and funerals.

On four chords in rock music: If it was good enough for T. Rex, Slade, The Damned, The Ramones and the New York Dolls, then it's good enough for me.

Pachebel

just struck the right chord.

Given the foot of most English pop lyrical verse, it makes sense that these four chords would work.

Personally, given the choice between that hysterical Wagner (not at my wedding, gods I beg thee, not!) and "The Air the breathèd oe'r Eden" I'll take Air on the G String and Canon in D any day - it was, after all, originally wedding music, no?

The kid in this video sure understands more than two or three chords...he's got all three voices running with the wild bass playing fun games. Neat. This is creativity.

"Grease" is a word

I can't remember if it's in the movie, but it's on the original cast album from Broadway. "Those Magic Changes":

"C-C-C,C-C-C
A-A-A-A-minor
F-F-F,F-F-F
G-G-G-G-seventh"

Great, now it's stuck in my head for the rest of the day!
