I moved into a shared house a few weeks ago, in the kitchen we have a WM62 Hotpoint Aquarius 1000 washing machine and a very old Early 90s (1990/1991) Zanussi DW910 TCR Dishwasher.

The Dishwasher is brilliant, dispite the landlord plumbing it into the hot water supply, this helps with the drying phase and makes the glasses come out extra sparkly, its so heavy, robust and well built, no wonder its still going after 22 years.

The washing machine is awful, and its now broken. I noticed when I first did a wash that everything was coming out hot instead of cold, I'm guessing the landlord plumbed the machine to the wrong taps, and the drum has caught on an interior component of the machine and has ripped a big hole in the drum, rendering the machine useless.

Hopefully we shall get a second hand Zanussi washer as a replacement, id like one that matches the dishwasher =]

WM62

Please keep the WM62 and fix it eventually, because these were the last decent built hotpoints before the indesit company purchased GDA's Share of hotpoint in 2001.

Come on and turn off the nostalgia ;)
Have a look of the current line up of Hotpoint machines, they're nothing short of brilliant!

Turn off the nostalgia?

It has to be said that in the UK, Hotpoint was a mainstay of relatively reliable, good quality laundry equipment before the Indesit takeover. That's why we'd rate models like the WM6x above as the last good machines by the brand. Still so very repairable too.

Things like drum fragile paddles and here-today-gone-tomorrow electronics serve to make the impression of Indesit-owned Hotpoint a pale imitation of what it once was. Being the proud owner of one of the original Hotpoints, I'd seriously hesitate to part with my cash for a new one (except perhaps as something to play with). No-one can deny they're better featured, but that's not everything.

That said, so many makes have gone the same way!

@Darren
my hotpoint HV6L105P is abit bitter sweet, i like it and it washes well, but when the washer is plugged into the mains and switched on at the mains, the washer will turn itself on without having the on/off button pressed. it gets quite annoying :(
my best mate has the new ultim like yours but in black and she loves it :)

Not worth keeping.....

It's unlikely the landlord would want to faff about with it by the sound of it, but in any case I don't reckon that Hotpoint's worth keeping. It's not exactly rare, there's still a decent amount kicking about on eBay & probably alot more still being used, so it's not like you'd be saving one of the last. Plus the repair would be pretty major in terms of work required - it's not like it just needs a new door rubber or something simple - the whole drum would have to come out & be replaced, and that's before you find out what caused it to be ripped open.

They might be one of the last better made Hotpoint's but having had family who owned early 80s Hotpoints (Mum had a 95450, Gran had a Microtronic LE & Auntie had a 95622) it's not really much of a statement. Mum's machine and her friends who've owned late 80s & early 90s Hotpoints have all had a decent length of service out of them (minimum 7 years) but in that time they've needed brushes, pressure switches, heaters, suspension parts & so forth so it's no wonder they lasted ok, because half the machine had been replaced!

The more recent ones still seem to need parts that just aren't needed on other brands - last night on eBay i saw 3 Hotpoint vented dryers that are no more than 2 years old & all of them have problems with the drum going out of allignment, and that's before i even looked at Indesit & their condensors that'd broken.

The very latest stuff *appears* better made but c'mon, if they can't even make a tumble dryer to last more than 2 years then they're really not that Hot! The dishwasher on the other hand.....oh yes!

Zanussi Dishwasher

Reminds me a lot of visiting the Scandanavian countries. I always loved the cool washing up symbols Europeans used (even on cars and stuff)!

What sort of water usage does that dishwasher have? Is it good or bad?

Kyle

The WM series are the last proper Hotpoints.
I have the WM62P like that, and it is a good machine.
But, in a situation like this, any washer is better! (that works!)
However, the new ones are decent, better than the last series.

Perhaps you could suggest to your landlord the new Hotpoint washer dryers - if you want a dryer that is!
Such as the Aquarius WDAL8640G, have enclosed a link :)

Oh well, good luck!

I have noticed that the latest Hotpoints seem to be much better than the ones they produced before, which is good because my Gran now owns one and I don't want it to turn out worthless.

My great gran has just got herself the last generation washer dryer, model WDF740P, which isn't too bad quality wise, but the new washerdryers also look good.

My friend owns the WML540P Aquarius from 2011, which is used 3 times a day, and its bearings are slowly on their way out, but that is undestandable because even if it is on a Synthetics programme at 1000, they will put it on a fast 1400 spin after.

Best wishes

I dont know

I dont know what machine the landlord is going to replace it with, but it will be a cheap one from a second hand shop thats for sure. Whatever it is, as long as it works and doesn't take long to wash then I'm happy.

Hoping we get a Zanussi though, or a Bosch. When I was at uni my washers ranged from a Hotpoint WD440 washer dryer, a Siemens XB1060 1000rpm washer, and a Zanussi ZWF1020.

Been doing washing at my friends flat and he has a horrible CDA 1200rpm built in washer dryer, and its awful, the timer feels like its going to fall off when you turn it and it dispenses the fabric conditioner on the first rinse instead of the final rinse, you have to switch it off at the wall just to get the door to unlock.

But it washes and dries quite ok, dispite these problems.
