Odd that they'd talk about finding old American audio equipment then pan past an old Sansui and an old JVC.

 

The Westinghouse fan they show has Micarta plastic blades, not metal. Oh, well.

And the vintage Singer didn't look oh so vintage either.. I thought they'd show one of the old black iron horses LOL... I think we're getting too old now, our vintage stuff is now antiques

I can go along here as well-the sewing machines shown are not old enough.the Hi-fi gear isn't old enough,either.the Hi-fi gear shown is 70s-80s.Its better than most-the best really for Hi-fi is 50s,60's.But beware-speakers could be "dried out"the cone sorrounds may be rotted-most vintage speakers this can be repaired-or the driver replaced.I too,go for the sewing machines of the 40s,50's,60'sthe mainly mechanical ones.

They should have a video "5 items that are better New than Old". I can only think of two... : )

1. Computers (including internet)
2. And Fuel Injection.

I'm sure there must be others, but the cheapness and disposability of anything I think of trumps any "betterment" in my book.

Well we're at that point in time now that most people under the age of 30 never grew up with the real good quality vintage stuff. Most of the things their parents had was more than likely from the 80's decline. Heck even stuff in the 70's was starting to cheap out.

I'd mostly go along with computers as a good modern thing. But build quality does seem to have slid quite a bit over the years. Computers have become yet another disposable electronic device. While it's inevitable that older models become less useful as software demands mount, I am not amused by hardware that lasts a year before blowing up.

I know some people would question fuel injection--some people miss the days of simple, easily repaired cars. I'm not sure what my attitude is--I never had problems with carburetors, but have heard the horror stories. On the other hand, I have had problems with fuel injection systems--although, despite my early cynicism, I have to admit that fuel injection has been mostly reliable and long lasting.

One other modern invention I reluctantly like are cell phones. I dislike the standard call quality, and don't understand the need many have to have a cell phone glued to the ear from breakfast to midnight snack. But the convenience in an emergency away from home is a good thing.

I also like DVD--better picture than VHS, more convenient than VHS, and reasonably durable.

Do without ALL computers, cell phones digital TV ETC! If I could buy the products that could be bought in the 50s, Wouldnt it be great to go in a Sears store and buy a round cornered Coldspot fridge...NEW! or a Lady Kenmore vacuum...about a 60 or 61 model NEW!!! Or how about a pair of 63 Lady Kenmore washer and Dryer..in pink or turquoise,,,,NEW!..Forget modern technology, I will take quality ANYDAY!

Some things imo are a definite improvement today and two of the biggies are cars and TV's. There is no comparison between todays flat screen televisions and the beloved vintage sets and as for cars, well todays cars are almost maintenance free and chock a block full of features that either didn't exist or were costly options.
But when it comes to the small stuff like appliances etc. most are inferior built junk. They may work as well but they're not going to last.

I dont even have a radiator!

I love my Bug. When it takes less than an hour to pull a motor, and a few days to get it all finished.

New distributer, new Vacuum advance, new vacuum fuel pump, new carburetor, spark plugs, wires, lines, hoses, tubes, air cleaner, tins, etc etc.

Maybe what we need is a modern invention that--as far as I know--hasn't been invented yet: a time machine. One could go back in time and buy a vintage appliance when it was new. Just be sure to pay cash--I don't want to think what 50 years of interest on a store charge plan might run to....
