56 MobileMaid pump equals 66 GE Combo pump?

Link is for the thread as I started this 1956 GE portable dishwasher restoration. I have also seen, in Mickeyd's thread on "<span class="threadtitle">Need Combo Expertise on GE's 66 Version" what I think is the same pump, so I'm hoping a few experts will join in and see.</span>

 

<span class="threadtitle">Pump works fine but leaks. It's an electric pump, says "Gorman-Rupp of Belleville OH." I actually sell some electronics to those folks, but it's 47 years too late for questions there. The motor is stamped DEC 59, so this was replcaed 3 years into usage on this dishwasher. And my 79 Filter-Flo suds model has a Gorman-Rupp diverter valve.

50's GE impeller dishwasher--akron OH

Someone said that after you search 2 years and find one, then within a month another comes along. So this time it's my maternal Grandma's EXACT replacement, black propeller GE dishwasher from the 50's. Model 1SP40N, ser 55423890. does that mean 1955 model? And it say GE Automatic Dishwasher...

Pump looks like the same manufacturer for sure, lower right corner of the base,  maybe someone can advise me who knows GE combo's better than 56 GE dishwashers?

terrible picture

This is the bottom of the impeller. That blurred silver shaft pokes thru the small rubber fitting up the thread, and has a slow leak whenever the pump runs. The shaft screws onto the motor shaft. Also, near the base of the impeller silver shaft shown, there's a cup-like/lip assembly. Less than a cup of water leaks for the entire cycle, but hoping to solve it. Maybe a strip of plumbers thread packing thin cord?

 

Besides saying Gorman-Rupp and DEC 59, somewhere it is stamped "11.5" but no other markings anywhere.

sealing the housing

It had a liquid "Form-A-Gasket" type sealing before. I really don't know if it leaked or was I just seeing the shaft/rubber leak, but I do now need to put it back together. I am used to red RTV, but usually on larger surfaces. Any recommendation for this pretty thin lip? After the shaft leak is solved, of course.

That pic is from Jon Charles, a founder and benefactor of Aworg, who was kind enough to join in the fun. He IS restoring his 56 Combo. My 66 only needs to re-learn how to dry, How cool that the pumps are the same. I've seen the same thing with Speed Queen pumps.

If I could help, I'd be delighted, but you are leagues and leagues ahead of me. I do follow all of your work, though, and was just going to post in your other thread that you should get another Mobile Maid while so many seem available, and you should get in touch with Big Al of Salt Lake City. He know and loves both Dishwashers and Combos (hmmm, just remembered his Combo expertise) and is a whiz. He also works at a Habitat and is sometimes overrun with machines that he has to find homes for, kinda like a rescue appliance guy, and he gives them away. You'd only have to pay shipping. He is also a totally decent and outstanding man, a pleasure to know.

That way, if you get in his orbit, you'll have another chance at getting another beat-the-crap-out-of-dirty-stuff Mobile Maid which you could use in alternation with this beauty once you fix her pump which we all know you will.
 
To your question on thin lips

Over 20 years ago, I sealed this thin-lipped Hupp Easy pump with some blue gummy stuff I got at Ace hardware. It never dripped a drop. Big mistake pulling it off; this seal was good to go forever. All I needed to do was work the agitator to free up the frozen agitator shaft rather than the impeller to which the agi shaft is attached. One of those impulsive moments where I tried to fix quick before thinking it through.

Thanks for your advice, blue or red RTV is what I'll use.

 

As for more dishwashers, I'm up to three now in a medium sized kitchen. I gotta finish all the work, then decide to part with one. Washers and dryers by the score have tons of space in my big old basement, but the kitchen ain't big.
 
the pumps do look the same

mine actually is on a 1955 Combo, it was the only year they carried them, in 56 GE switched to a direct motor driven system so the pump on my machine was not used after '55.

 

Why not cut cork gaskets people? they are so easy to reopen in the future?

 

I have not been inside my pump yet and I can't tell from the blurry photos what is going on but I'd bet the pump shaft has a cup lip seal and those are notorious for wearing thin and leaking. But they are still made in standard sizes and I'd check McMastercCarr.

re-assembled and no leaks

I cut a new cork gasket, that works fine. For the leak on the spindle, I got 2 Orings, 1/8 " I.D., and put one down the spindle in that cup area, then assembled it through the back of the pump body, and installed another Oring on the front before screwing it on to the motor rotor. All is well after 2 loads, 10 pumpouts. So a simple Oring now presses against both ends of that worn rubber fitting, and seals it well.
