60's Fridge Cut-Out Temps?

Hey guys,

This is a continuation of my earlier post regarding my '65 GE (non-frost free) that was running continuously and freezing everything in the fridge compartment.

I'm now playing musical chairs with various cold controls that are cross-referenced to work...yet don't seem to. What I'm wondering is what the cut-out temp should be on such a fridge. With extended running, the evaporator hovers between 10-15F; fridge compartment is right at 30F. This, with the dial set for warmest. This morning after running all night, the evap was down to 5F and I had to smack the new cold control to get it to cut out.

If I knew what the cutout temp was supposed to be, I could shop by spec rather than "this says it crosses".

Thoughts from the experts?

Cory, I had a devil of a time with an aftermarket cold control on a GE LW11 wall fridge.  Like you, I found the compressor ran continously and cooled the refrigerator compartment a bit too well....  

My "solution" was to restring the sensor probe from the new control so that it was smack in the middle at the bottom of the cooling coils - it needed to get good and cold to cut the control out.  That seemed to do it for me - hope this helps!

 

Oh, and for some reason, the control would not switch the compressor 'off' - I can't remember where they went but I switched the wires on the control around and this did it.

I have a couple Gemline catalogs left over from the old days. You were correct in the previous post that they call for the GC116 as a replacement. The catalog also gives specs for the GC116 as "Normal cut-in: 37.5 and Normal cut-out:-10.5"

The catalog also lists GC308 and GC402 as viable replacements. 308's numbers are 37.5 in and -12 out. 402's numbers are "Normal off: -11, Warm off: 3, Cold off: -23, Cut-in: 39"

I had no trouble with my Gemline replacement.  I'll have to check the part number on it.  IIRC, the -12 cut-out seems about right.  I was careful about attaching the new sending unit to the coil exactly like the old one was situated.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. This fridge has always run cold, even on the warmest setting (for all the years I've run it), but being un-airconditioned, and the recent heat wave we've had, it could just be the evap isn't getting quite cold enough to cut out.

I've added a little more mass to the freezer, cleaned the condenser coils (though they looked okay) and checked to make sure 'the bulb' was strapped on the coldest portion of the evaporator. Maybe a little thermal paste under the clamp?

I did find an adjustment screw on the new MARS unit and gave it half a turn...we'll see if that helps.
