It wasn't exactly an estate sale but we went to an electronics & television store that was quitting business after 50 years. I walked in the door and found these! A GE upright and a Kirby 518 - I already have a 518 and have passed up a couple of the GE's but...well, you know how it is!

And it didn't stop with just vacs, I found a few other things at bargain basement prices...

These two were ones the owner threw in just for fun. The Technics from the 70's looks fun but the Marantz is a Japanese built model and not as sought after. All the equipment in the shop had been diagnosed and had notes on them about what their individual problems were.

Now for the really good stuff!

Here is an old TV I just couldn't pass up -- and if you listen closely, you'll hear Jon/Jetcone shrieking all the way from Cape Cod -- two 70's Marantz receivers, a 2240 and a 2270. The only problem with the 2270 is the power switch, all the parts, screws, etc. are all with the unit. The 2240 is allegedly working. The service manuals for all the units were included. Ready for the kicker? Sit down Jon... $10 each!

Wow Greg, those are some great finds there! Looks like I stopped by a week too early - I'm sure you were going nuts! I think Cory has that RCA set restored, and I can't believe you just picked up a 2240 & 2270 for 10 bucks each! You always find the good stuff - enjoy!

THE GE

I never knew GE made uprights like that. What do the two white levers on either side of the machine do? Does it run? How well? Tim

I have a very similar Marantz receiver/tuner. I bought it used from a neighbor of mine in Houston in the early 80s. I think it was a wopping 50 watts, maybe 100 watts. It's still in use today.

Yay Greg!
Great find!
Very nice stereo equipment.
You know that Marantz was also offered as a Quad receiver.
Can't wait to hear how they work!
Glad you are finding what you were looking for.
I have been looking for you here in Atlanta, but it is dry.

Greg it looks like you had another great weekend with lots of new treasure finds. With all this stero equipment your place will be ready to "rock and roll"!! Terry

Tim I think that the white levers may be used for attachment conversion and height adjustment but I am not sure about that.

Great finds Greg,
I have a marantz Model 2270 that was found in a dumpster and it works fine and no problems with it and it is in great shape.
like the saying goes one man's trash is another man's treasure

Skip...

GE Upright

That design dates to the early 1960's, GE's only vertical motor upright, and it was made into the 1970's with the Premier name.
The white levers are suction control, and tool conversion. The suction lever opened a bleeder in the nozzle so it would not hug the carpet. The other lever was hose conversion. It shifted the suction from the nozzle to the hose port, and shifted the motor into high speed. The hose connected at the right rear of the base.
These were ok cleaners, but very LOUD! The sounded sorta Kirby-ish, but had a very distinct whine.

Nice Find Greg!

Ben, that same store was having their sale last week too - for four weeks now, but I forgot about it. The store was amazing - I grabbed all the Marantz in the building (because of Jon's raving about them) but there was so much more there - mostly TV stuff, repair parts, books, etc. but there was a very early FM stereo unit, a Telefunken that was too cool.

Robert, the TV is model 8-T-241. Postwar - 1948. It's all complete but some of the finish is a bit degraded and flaking off. It was just too cool to leave for the dumpster.

I had some friends over for dinner tonight so I've not had time to play with the new toys but will in the morning. (I'm not getting very far on the office painting, Terry! ;-)

Vacuum schmacuum

Greg, What about that beautiful early 50's Easy with the famous three chrome rings, and the spectacular Kitchen Aid Agitator??!! behind the nasty dirty old vacs.

Do me a favor: if you have a 90's, plus or minus, DD Kenmore or Whirlpool, pop off the agitator and slide on the KA, and watch what it does on Hi speed.

Thank You

Mike

Nasty, dirty old vacs??

You just need to have more imgination!

Thanks Mike, I have used a KitchenAid washer with that agitator many times and it's patiently waiting for another machine to find a home. It's not recommended to use this larger agitator in a standard DD washer however, the KA washers had a different motor with a much larger capacitor in them to handle the additional drag created by this agitator.

That Easy is one I picked up on eBay a while back from a very nice antique collector in Lincoln, NE. It needs a new top seal on the agitator shaft and the Spiralator drive is a bit worn, but otherwise it's almost in mint condition.
