My Friend's Brand New Washer/Dryer/Dishwasher Purchases

OK, so my friend Elizabeth who I used to work with and I were talking about her new house and she said the dishwasher doesn't work. It was an old Maytag dishwasher. I told her she should get it fixed if possible but if not, that if she does buy a new dishwasher, get a Maytag. (this was like a year ago). Today she texts me and she says, "Mark, I got a new dishwasher and washer dryer!" I'm like, "send pictures!"

She sends me a picture of her old dishwasher - then new one, and the washer dryer - which is a stacked GE. I do not know much about these stacked GE's. She said the only reason they got it was that it was the only stackable Home Depot had in stock. I went online the read reviews and they are horrible. I'm thinking perhaps I should tell her to get the longest extended warranty they have. I really do not know much about these and the vidoes on YouTube are sporadic.

Being the bearer of both good and bad news

GE would have been my last choice for a stack. From the appliance techs I've asked these have a boat load of transmission and seal problems- but then again the last run of production might have improvements. Without a doubt I would have gone with a Whirlpool stack. The Whirlpool stacks being made today are still DD, and both the washer and dryer design remains virtually identical (and proven) from 25 years ago. Clean-ability and balancing is also stellar with the DD.

As for the Dishwasher its a winner. It has a chopper, strongest motor in Whirlpool's line up and cleans very, very well. I doubt she will have any type of problem with her dishwasher. That and its very quiet.

She has been using the washer

I told her the HOT water may not be hot because a lot of the washer hot settings are dumbed down, but she says it gets HOT and fills all the way to the top and the clothes dry fast - so far she is happy with it. She says you can't overload it or it bangs......the capacity isn't that of a full sized washer but so far it's working out fine for her.

For her dishwasher - she said it came with Cascade platinum and the dishes came really clean. She was rinsing her dishes b4 putting them in the dishwasher and I told her do NOT do that unless it's egg - just scrape and load. She bought Cascade GEL with clorox and I told her that may not be the best choice. If that doesn't work to get either Cascade Platinum or Finish Powerball. She cooks A LOT. She is an 80 year old woman trapped in a 43 year old woman's body.

I like the GE stackable compared to the WP.The WP is very small and it's auto water fill and doesn't do that great at it from what I've read. The Frigidaire stackable looks very nice too actually. The appliance guy in Texas posted a video of it...looks pretty good!

New Top-Load Stackable

 The GE stackables are every bit as bad as the reviews, If it were me I would send it back, tell them that it bangs with heavy or anything to get it out of the house. These machines are terrible we end up condemning about 75% of the ones we see on the first service call, biggest serious problem is the main seal and bearings on the washer, followed by bad lid locks and main boards. The dryers have lots of bad motors and timers.

 

Yes the WP-MT DD top-load stack is the way to go, it has a much larger usable capacity in both the washer and dryer and it could actually last a 43 year old till they are 80, LOL.

 

The MT DW should be great, but unless she has soft water she needs to use the premium DW detergent tabs, if the DW starts to develop any haze or film on the shinny SS door interior or the glassware is not coming out spotless and beautiful switch immediately to prevent serious DW damage.

Mark-- One of the selling points of Cascade Platinum dishwasher pacs is that it keeps the interior of the machine clean and shiny. It works as advertised, as least in soft water. I'll sometimes switch out and use a tub of Sam's Club pacs and the bottom of my GE gets dull-looking. After 5 loads or so using Cascade, the interior looks great again.

Sending it back

I'm with Combo on this. That stack should not be banging at all. Something is wrong with the suspension, balance ring or leveling for it to be doing that- assuming bad engineering is not the culprit. I would see if the item is returnable and have it switched for a DD.

And yes, the DD will easily outlast that GE or a full size set. You have the same parts as a DD in both the washer and dryer driving far less load which means those same parts will wear down much slower.

She's pretty smart

When she said banging, I think it may just been a poor choice of words. If it were making a legitimate banging noise - she would have told me. I just think what she meant to say is that it makes a little more noise when it's overloaded.

I told her it got horrible reviews and there are known issues with that GE stackable and told her what some of you have said about the units...so it's up to her and her husband what they do -

I'm confused about the Whirlpool stackable - the ones I looked at did not have an agitator and were smaller capacity - Can someone link me to the DD Stackable? Thanks

Both of these are DD and agitator to my knowledge. The capacity is smaller than a traditional full size DD top load, but don't let it fool you. Similar to the world washer, these fit a lot for their size. Both come with a "deep fill" option.

Because stores do not sell stack-able washers as much as others, many places like Lowes and PCrichards often have the older versions in stock which do not have automatic water levels or any other energy saving features. Here is one example:

I am pretty sure you could get the above in electric from another store if HD does not have it, but in any case all of them are genuine DDs and genuine reputation earned compact dryers.

It's funny that

the stackable washers aren't as big as regular TL washers - Looking at it , if you take away the dryer, it actually looks like a regular full sized washer.

Honestly if there is any doubt, just get an extended warranty. I'd personally pick the GE over the WP as I almost went with this type of unit and researched it considerably. Just buy what you like! That's my new motto. LOL
