Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

No, they don't rebuild small compressors. In fact, even the motor winding shops look at you funny if you want them to rewind a small motor.

I recently had a 1/6 hp stator out of a monitor top rewound. I did it because I obsessive and crazy, not because of cost savings. I could have a beautiful new stainless steel fridge for less than the work on the old one.

We hve lost much of our small rebuild, repair and manufacturing services. We live in a throwaway society.

I'm a bit like Travis in that if I want something i'l go to extremes sometimes.

I see what you mean about buying a used one, theres good ones out there i'm sure, might have to go that way in the end. Why the obsession with GE? is it easier to get parts? so many avalable?

Question is, how can the man installing the compressor not have the equipment to recover the refrigerant?  To do the whole job, he has to be EPA certified to handle refrigerants.  Do you have the equipment and the certification?  To be truthful, maybe its time to have a conversation with your mother about this unit.  Modern Frigidaires seem to be laid out much like this one.  I would also consider this Amana, which is a Whirlpool without the hideous logo.  As for the color, maybe you could see if she can live with white and if she still wants avocado, you can always spray paint the doors.

Dont know where you got this "Question is, how can the man installing the compressor not have the equipment to recover the refrigerant?" I just asked him if I evac and charge the system what it would cost so he gave me a price. I dont know why anyone would like the new frig's or anything new really. I would like having a through door ice and water dispencer though but not required, takes up door storage space anyway. We have a couple months to figure this out, I took the patio backup frig into kitchen for now but she hates the top freezer and not much room inside like the side by side 36".

Those older Frigidaires can still be found, there is one on EBay in Coppertone (check the shoppers square). They want too much for that one, but checking thrift stores, used appliance shops, estate sales, I'll bet you could turn one up.

My mom has the 3 door style in white in her basement, still works. I'd give it to you if you were closer.

I know your right. Thanks, appreciate the thought GoatF

I looked at a big used appliance repair shop today, quite a few of the newer ones and some very old ones with the compressor on top, round tops. The painter was working on a round top white with turquoise trim, looked classic. Tried to pic there brain on the removal of trim but seems there all a bit different. Wanted to ask about a used gm rotary compressor but the mechanic wasn't in, not much luck today.

I got mine for $25 on Craigslist earlier this year. BTW, I looked for more information in my service manuals and I don't have the one for this fridge. I think the compressor is a 1/3 hp. Unlike the older models that I have, my 1977 SXS runs it's defrost timer only when the compressor is running. So if it gets low use or if it's in a cool environment, it doesn't defrost as often as earlier ones that did it at fixed intervals, 1,2,3, or 4 times a day.

Thanks for looking Phil. Guess ya cant tell the HP by the plate on motor, at least I cant. So less CF would be a 1/4 hp perhaps? I'm not sure if I should get a used comp or new, according to Combo52 he'd go either way? My mom's was old but died from overheating I think or maybe the inners were shot, I know its shorted. It, the comp did make weird noises when starting towards the end, like clanking. suppose no matter what you do there going to die someday but its strange how others seem to last for decades?

Checked and March '73 as the manufacture date makes sense. It was installed on October 24, '73 so 6 months in a warehouse somewhere?

Tag on frig door is "Frigidaire Custom Imperial 220"
