How can you tell that these are belt drives? I would like to know for future reference.

Two ways:
1. The washer cabinet is as wide as the dryer's, which is 29". Cabinets on direct drive washers were 2" narrower.
2. There is plenty of surface area on the top beyond what the lid takes up. Lids on direct drive washers are larger than belt drive lids, and with the smaller cabinets, take up more of the surface area.

The lids were bigger on direct drive washers because the tub opening was round; not that damn D-shape.
