Greetings everyone! When I was a child from the age of being a newborn til I was seven years old we had a 90s Roper in the household, and I’ve been wondering for many years when Roper was first introduced, and if the first two photos below is of the first series of Roper washers? I saw a scan in here about 1991 Roper Washers and Dryers with this same console as what I’m about to share so I’d assume it was 1991 Roper washers and dryers were launched? I’ve never seen another variety of Roper machines other than direct driven (from before the new belt drives). This is such a rare, never spoken about direct drive line on here, and even though they didn’t come with all the bells and whistles as others did they were very nicely styled machines still and I loved the chrome lining on ours and red and blue logo, but that turquoise agitator the most! Back form when washers were allowed to be fun looking, instead of bland and all white. This was such an iconic looking machine for something more on the basic side and our family loved this machine dearly, the extra options you find on other machines were just unnecessary for us because that machine provided more than exceptional performance in every load given the cycles it did have.

Clearly they updated/refreshed the console at some point in the 90s, our machine was the refreshed model that had the black console still but with the two knobs on the left now closer together to each other and the bleach dispenser was the updated more popular triangular style. Ours still had the turquoise dual action agitator, and the old style pump. Will attach photos of what we had so you can see the difference and make more sense of it. Hopefully someone has some insight on when they were launched, and maybe when they were slightly refreshed? I’m aware all the whirlpool made machines underwent that slight refresh not just the Roper machines. Ours had to be rather a 1994-1996 model cause I’m aware the older pumps stopped production around 97 or 96.

First two photos are of the style in question of whether it was the first Roper models, pic credit from Shorties Applainces, the third pic is a real photo of our machine, and the last two photos are of another listing from shorties of the same identical model as ours just so you can see it more closely as well as the interior.

Roper was a long established and highly regarded name in stoves/ovens/ranges. In fact at one point they were the largest producer and seller of such appliances in USA IIRC. For various reasons the company went up for sale in 1980's and things got nasty.

General Electric was set to purchase Roper then Whirlpool (ever still on an aquisition binge of buying) tried to muscle their way in. Whole matter ended up in the courts (IIRC) before being settled. When dust cleared in 1988 WP and GE each got parts of Roper.

Given Roper never made washing machines but Whirlpool did earliest washer to have Roper brand would have to be late 1980's after WP got their mitts on the name.

As always it pays to wander about the archives, we've discussed various Roper brand washing machines, dryers, ranges, etc... previously.

Basically since introduction Roper washers, dishwashers and such appliances are lower shelf versions of what Whirlpool is or was currently flogging.

Ironically seem to recall when Consumer Reports would test and rank washers and dryers Roper always seemed to come out ahead of various offerings by Whirlpool. This especially in terms of reliability.

Believe Whirlpool started making Roper washers sometime in the 1980’s as a budget brand for big box stores, mainly were BOL models if I remember correctly.

Roper washers and dryers were incredibly popular here in the early 90’s into the 2010’s. Going from the direct drive platform to the VMW they were dependable machines at a budget price. I bought a nicely featured model in December 1998 that has had 2 repairs. I replaced the drive coupling once and the the lid switch.

Roper laundry appliances

We’re introduced by whirlpool in 1988-89

Whirlpool and GE got into a bidding war over Roper when Roper was put on the auction block, GE got the factories. Whirlpool got the rights to the name, GE unfortunately, started using the roper designed ovens for their wall ovens and some of their freestanding ranges and for the first time ever GE ranges became junk.

Roper was a good old name in gas ranges, but whirlpool did not need Ropers manufacturing capacity and Roper ranges. The last many years Roper gas ranges became very cheap and we’re not that great and Roper never built a great Electric range anyway.

Both GE and whirlpool were trying to get the Sears range business, which is why they were both going after Roper.

History of Roper company is confusing, you need a score card to keep up. *LOL*

As with what became known as Whirlpool corporation Sears at one time not only was Roper's largest customer, but majority stock holder as well.

Ironically George Roper company eventually buying back that 60% or so stake from Sears made his company attractive to buyers and vultures began to circle.

Whirlpool actually in end pulled out of bidding for all of Roper company leaving GE with an almost free hand. Deal worked out gave GE Roper's kitchen appliance and lawn mower manufacturing divisions while WP got their mitts on Roper brand name for laundry appliances. GE agreed to provide gas and electric ranges to Whirlpool for a short period of time.

Roper had been making some GE ranges at the time which gave General Electric idea of simply purchasing entire company I suppose.

Whirlpool fresh off acquisition of KitchenAid wanted Roper to balance things out. Former would be their "premium" appliance range, while latter a "value" brand.

Since WP only wanted the Roper name it make sense to one that they weren't so bothered in end with GE getting George Roper's manufacturing plants for ranges, stoves, ovens, lawn appliances, etc...

It also explains why WP was able to put Roper branded laundry appliances on market so quickly after dust settled. Being nothing more than stripped down or otherwise slightly different versions of Whirlpool major appliances under the bonnet all WP had to do was make cosmetic changes between the two.

The date coding linked above is for WP serial numbers (model numbers are a different coding sequence).  There apparently are errors on it.  It doesn't jibe with a WP document I have which indicates that letter I isn't used for serials and number 0 (zero) still is used for 1990 forward.

The pattern repeats on a 30-yr cycle referencing back to 1980 so 2015 = 5.

Or, is this chart from the WP document wrong?

Thank you everyone for that detailed information! I wanted more specific details from my thread so that’s why I directly asked and posted. Anyway, that is quite interesting because I was under the impression that Whirlpool created Roper as a more affordable basic machine for consumers on a budget. That’s great information, so I’ll take it that the 1991 model I posted a pic of was one of their first models of washers after WP took over the laundry category of roper. Mystery solved!

The last reply in 12 is a bit eccentric considering what I was asking, lol.

Anyways, thank you everyone above!

All tied to Sears

Since Whirlpool, Roper, Newark OH Co., and Florence Stove Co. were all under partial ownership of Sears for many years, nearly every business decision by those companies was done for Sears benefit. Even the fact that Roper dishwashers in the 70's were made by D&M was tied into that, as Sears Kenmore dishwashers were made by D&M, and Roper was partially owned by Sears. When Whirlpool closed their Estate Range Co. division in Hamilton, OH in 1962, Roper began building Whirlpool gas ranges in Kankakee, IL and electric models in Newark, OH. Link tells about the factory in IL.

Whirlpool didn’t even have gas ranges for nearly a decade

From the late 60s all the way through the 70s there were no whirlpool branded gas ranges. Then whirlpool started buying gas ranges from Tappan then caloric/sunray and finally in the later 90s they started building their own gas ranges, which were pretty decent.

D&M made dishwashers with more than 30 different brand names on them over there history for all kinds of different reasons almost every range maker had their name on a DM Dishwasher at sometime and I think you could get your own name on one if you put in a big enough order, lol
