A few Maytag Questions

I have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can help me on. I have a Maytag Center dial set that is used daily.
My dryer a DE308 quit working the other day, the timer would kind of buzz when pushed, but didn't sound like it was working, so I purchased a new timer and replaced it. However when we turned it on you could smell heat (i'm assuming from the element) but nothing happened. Could it be the motor or maybe just a door switch.

Question 2:
I also purchased a new timer for the washer a A608 because the permanent press side didn't work and when you run it on a small load, during the spin it sounds like it's grinding in the tub. But when you run it on a med,reg,or large load it's fine. I'm going to post under this a copy of the new timer pic and I'm hoping someone will be able to tell me how to hook up the new timer so I can use the perm press side again and hopefully someone will also have good news and an easy fix on why during the spin it grinds only on a small load.

Thanks I'd really appreciate the help because I really love this set. The dryer belonged to my partners grandmother and the only way I would get rid of the washer that he hated was if I got the matching washer. Which magically appeared on craigs-list the next day after I said it so we went and bought it.

I recently experienced this with my DE408, which is your dryer with heat buttons to the right of the dial. The buzz you speak of is not the actual buzzer but another hum. It SOUNDS like the start switch in the motor is stuck or bad. DO NOT operate this machine like that. The motor is trying to start but the start switch is not engaging the start windings. Since the start switch is not engaging, the heater is coming on every time you start the timer, because it is wired through the start switch for a safety. That way when the motor stops (like for opening a door) and the switch returns to it's rest position, the heat is cut and the drum stops. Problem is since the switch is not returning, it's not engaging the start winding to start the motor but it is completing the heat circuit. The "Switch" I am referring to is a centrifugal switch inside the motor. You can remove the motor in the dryer and try and clean it out, maybe spray some WD-40 into the switch, but it's not easy to get at on the square motors. You *MAY* have to replace the motor or have it repaired. Either way it needs to be looked at and I would not continue to attempt to use it. I had an extra parts machine and a good clean motor.

 

Someone else here may chime in as well, but that was my experience and I just replaced the motor with an extra as I have 3 people in the house waiting on the dryer to be fixed.

 

 

As to the washer question, do you mean the sound changes based on water level or based on the amount of clothes in it? What kind of sound is it? Could be a number of things, possibly dampers? Need more info on that one.

 

 

PS if worse comes to worse I am 4 hours away, I may have some parts and be able to fix it.

I will check the motor when I get home tonight. Thanks for the info. As to the washer. It sounds like gears grinding during the spin but levels out as it gets into a full spin. It's completely weird since it doesn't do it at all on any of the other levels. Hope this info helps. If we can't get it I may see if you can help me fix them. BTW if I were still living at home you'd only be an hour away from E-town from where I grew up.

Did you disconnect the old timer w/o making a diagram?

Actually no i haven't disconnected the old timer. I'm having trouble reading the numbers off the old timer. I just wanted to make sure I hooked it up correctly.

Take it loose from the control panel, wipe it off and use a magnifying glass.
