Gibson Poppy

I used to be a Gibson dealer and sold a number of kitchens in poppy. This was
in the mid to late 70's. Looked nice but was kind of a bold move for people used to earthtones.

For most of the last century, Gibson was manufactured here in Michigan on the west side of the state. The factory later made Frigidaire branded appliances. Before it closed a few years back, the name Electrolux started to appear.

Gibson also has an automotive connection, like Frigidaire, Norge, Kelvinator, and later-day Philco. For a while, Gibson was owned by the Hupp Corporation, which was as a manufacturer of automobiles (Huppmobile) until about 1940. As I recall, Hupp was gobbled up by WCI sometime later.

Gibson was a very respected name in refrigeration and electric ranges long ago before any takeovers. Gibson air conditioners had the "Air Sweep" feature that used a small electric motor to move the louvers back and forth. That was in the 60s. They also had a thermostat setting that just put the compressor on constant run to precool a place before a party. I can't remember now if it was labeled Party or was just a C. They were expensive air conditioners when sold by the Georgia Power Company, but they also made the air conditioners (and possibly the refrigerators) for AMC which was sold at Rich's in Atlanta.

There used to be a Gibson dealer in Greenville.  My brother and sister-in-law bought a 40 inch Gibson stove in coppertone.  They already had a Gibson washer and dryer in white.  They also had a white GE fridge and dishwasher.  It seems like the Gibson appliances gave them good service.  I never knew why they bought the stove in coppertone since the rest of the kitchen appliances were white.  I asked him once.  He replied that it didn't matter... it was just a stove.  I figure the dealer must have given my brother a great deal...he never paid asking price for anything!

Re Appliance companies..

If you really stop and think, The only companies left that have not been bought out or taken over in some way are, Brown Stove, GE and Hotpoint, and Whirlpool, All the great old names of the past are either gone or sold out, Norge ,Philco ,Nash Kelvinator, Leonard, Westinghouse, Maytag,Crosley, Coolerator, Monarch, the list goes ON and ON, in 1954 this country made 2/3 of all goods produced in the world, Now where are we!!!???Dwight Eisenhower would roll over in his grave if he knew what had happened to his country!!

Yes, RITE WAY APPLIANCE is 'RITE NEAR' me!

My daughter & I went right to this store & saw this very range in person! (Too bad we didn't get or take any pictures!)

Laura was amazed at all the other appliances there & was opening 'em (& having me open 'em) right up...!
