I think my favorite line comes from Tales Of The City, when Laura Linney says to her mom on the phone, after mom finds out that her daughter has a gay friend, "I know you've heard of them. They have them on TV now!!"

And straight men, just like prostitutes tend to draw the line at kissing.

Jeff, you do raise an interesting point. If sex with a man is so incredibly hot, maybe that is why so many straights are terrified of it?

It is not so much that I am so 20th century, as that I simply can not imagine a passionate kiss with a woman.

I've kissed women, I mean, we all went through phases as teens, but it was neither passionate nor exciting nor did it disturb the folds of my jeans in the slightest.

Like I said, this guy is a seriously good actor. Tho', I understand from a pair of actors who do a lot of UK TV and where one is also straight, he insists he can only do the scenes they do (and UK TV is really, really much better than US TV and goes way further) because he trusts his lifelong friend who happens to be gay...

All too convoluted for my taste.

It's cultural conditioning, nothing else. Studies done with infants and young children in the past 30+ years have shown this beyond any doubt. Disgust and fear responses to homosexuality are learned behaviors, and are not hard-wired in human beings.

Ironically, at least in my experience the opposite isn't true. You mentioned your hetero phase.. I also had a girlfriend in junior high/high school, and we were close to having sex just one time. Just the thought of it at the time literally made me nauseous, and I can't account for that reaction (obviously I hadn't been culturally conditioned to respond that way to heterosexuality).

On a very fundamental level not.

Of course, one of the not so fun things about being gay is discovering that all the stereotypes about the screaming, self-loathing queens are true. Even today.

Maybe especially today, 'cause it must just be awful to see so many happy, well-adjusted men embracing their homosexuality as a positive thing.

But do keep in mind that there are men & women that just cant say they like only men or women.. And have torrid affairs for years and years. And I am sure everyone on this site knows many of them. I was very sure what I wanted from a VERY young age. And for me that was NEVER a question.
 
Same here Lee. Do you guys remember who your very first major crush was? Mine was a Cuban kid I went to school with in 7th grade (we were both 12). He wasn't gay, but he was so good looking, just his smile made me weak in the knees.

I did too - I can vividly remember one of my dad's friends holding both my arms very tight and saying right in my face: "stop it, I am not that strong."
I was 14, he was mid-thirties and boy did I have him in my sights. Honorable, ethical, gorgeous man, damn it. Couldn't get him to budge.

I DO remember well

@ 8 or so loved to watch Adam Pernell Roberts and Richard Boone also just loved Steve Mc Queen. at around 12 had a real thing with our gardener he was a old cowboy type around 50ish.. there was a family member that was with for many years too. A construction cowboy type.

He was considerably bigger than me - at least in height - and strong. When he said weak, he meant it exactly as I took it, if he hadn't had morals, I would have had my way with him. So he saw to it after that we were never alone together.
Darn it.

Of course, many years later when I was an adult he sat me down and explained that he and his partner were monogamous and flattering as it was, there was just no way.

Sigh.

The last Chef of a Restaurant I worked with ... He refered to a woman that was working with us " Well, she's the Queen", I told him with Hands on my hips... " Just remember one thing Mister, There is only one Queen in this Kitchen... And that's me... The Speed Queen !!!!" he blushed and could not speak to me for 5 minutes. So There.
 
Dave, you're what my partner and I affectionately call a "heartbreaker": a good looking straight guy who is completely secure with his own orientation, so he has no reason to feel threatened by the orientations of other guys.

We've known several of these men over the years, and they always manage to pull at our heartstrings more than anyone else. If medical science ever comes up with magic gay pills and you're willing to give them a try, please call us. :-)

Oh yeah, him and his fishin' buddies from a summer pic post thread last year. My kinda bubbas!!!! and all heartbreakers I'm sure, but definitely look like good guys to know and have around when ya need someone to bail ya out. The truest kinda buds and friends!!!

LOL ... I'm an organist, too. I know there are others on this list as well (Bobby, Louis, Rich ... where are you).

I know of only ONE straight male American organist, and I think she could be had for the price of a cocktail, like a salted peanut. European organists are very different; most males are straight!

Actually,

having lived in Europe for over a quarter of a century, I can attest that the fabulous gene is present and active in organists here, too.

It is, however, a very very extremely different gay reality for organists in central Europe than in the US. Not nearly as segregated a group or as, queenly, taking all in all.

Nor, to be honest, anywhere near as competent musically as the Americans. I think the Americans have done a much better job of integrating style, technique and new technologies to re-interpret both secular and liturgical music as well as jazz. Europeans tend to be very narrowly focused. This might have to do, especially in Austria and Germany, with the very strict certifications and classes which the two most prominent religious denominations have successfully continued over from the 19th century.

Yeah, I have a friend who is an organist and through Andy know several organists and have had the opportunity to listen to several hundred concerts through the years.
 
Some of the best American organists are not, however, men! Diane Bish continues her reputation as the "first lady of the organ", and I've never quite seen anyone work an instrument the way she does during a performance. (And no dirty comments about working that instrument.) Quite an astounding performance!!

I am in Illinois, in a small town near Peoria. I have a 5 rank unit Wicks built in 1946, so not much to work with there. I have an 18 rank pipe organ at home though and will blow out the windows right along with the neighbors. lol
I played the Palms today. Yes, I know, everyone seems to like it and always asks if I will play that on Palm Sunday.
We should all visit sometime. Gary
 
A VISIT TO PEORIA

I'm only a couple hours or so from Peoria. I haven't been there since I performed at Club Peoria in 93 or 94. But I need to plan at trip there. I found a typewriter repairman who can repair my IBM Memory 100 Typewriter, and most of my other non-working IBM's.

I'm not a devoted fan of organ music, but I get absolutely hypnotized by Diane Bish's playing. Every now and then when channel surfing I will see her playing, and just have to watch her. I also like some of her outfits, sequins are a girl's best friend ya know, LOL.

Indeed, not all great organists are men . . .

Shirley Scott, sometimes referred to as "Queen of the Organ", was generally acknowledged as one of the masters of the Hammond B3. She was also married to Stanley Turrentine, the famous saxophonist, and they recorded many songs together. Here's a link to their version of "God Bless The Child". Scott had a supreme elegance to her playing, but could really swing as well.

when i was a kid my parents never explained homosexuality to me or the mian difference between boys and girls they waited waaaaaaaaaay to long by that time my brother who plays on the boys team and little girlfriend who knew alot about this at such a young age broke it down to me when i was in 4th grade and the she walked me through it at 5th grade barely what i would call a relationship now LOL! but it still doesnt phase me i could care less what sexual preference someone has honestly i always like to look beyond that i see the person the characteristics and oddly most of my closest friends are gay or bisexual or curious cats LOL. i guess im back in the mindset like when i was kid it doesnt phase me and it never mattered.

my gay friends always call me the "odd straighteee" LOL now i know why.
 
Organ...

well, don't know about the organ...but if we ever get an east coast convention, I'll gladly bring my bass guitar if any of you know any classic rock stuff, we can jam :-)

Soo... on that note.... who are the musicians of AW.Org? Any of you have any vintage musical instruments?
