A little more info about my new dryer

Hi all,

So I'm still working on someone getting a picture of the dryer I was given a couple weeks ago. However, I do have some info that might be able to identify it better.

The model number is WED4900XW0. This might be able to lead you all exactly to the one I have. I'd be interested to know exactly how old this thing is, as it actually appears from the controls pretty recent. It has the rectangular knobs, which makes me believe it's a match to one of the early VMW washers.

I still am getting good results from it, though I find that medium heat for what I used to use high heat for is plenty sufficient, and for a lot of my shirts and whatnot I actually use low, which is a setting I didn't realize I cared about when I had the old Roper, but which is actually really nice to have. The auto dry on this machine is most times very accurate, too.

Let me say you have a really, really nice dryer

Yours is a step above my Maytag in that it has a hamper door and wrinkle control off switch. I know that doesn't sound like much, but on my machine I am forced to use the time dry setting because the accu dry automatically advances into wrinkle control which forces me to empty the dryer immediately. I find the constant starting and stopping annoying. Sucks when I run it while watching a movie or going to bed. I do not mind time dry, but when drying large loads on medium or delicate, especially delicate, 70 minutes is not enough, so I have to manually add more time. BUT- on accu dry I must admit regardless of temperature it shuts off at the right time.

All that aside I really like the tub light. Went years without a tub light and I always felt like something was missing when unloading. Love the temp control switch as I can use any temperature on any cycle. Never liked those BOL models that had high heat on time dry and low heat on auto dry. Been there tried that.

All in all I think you have the best model money can buy for the price. All the coveted features in one of the best and longest produced dryers. I love Speed Queen, and for the longest time mulled at a Speed Queen dryer, but the fact I am still holding on to the Maytag version of your machine says something.

Also to add

I am just like you, rarely do I use the high heat setting. Gets way to hot for my liking even though I grew up with some really hot dryers.

Wrinkle shield

Chetlaham, I haven't used the wrinkle shield in the two weeks that I've had the machine so far. I, too, think I would find the constant starting and stopping irritating, though strangely the dryer constantly running doesn't bother me in the same way. I guess I just feel like I'm in a small apartment where the laundry machines are in the hallway behind a closet door. Therefore I'll hear the buzzer, so no need for wrinkle shield in my mind. I might use it someday though, who knows.

A feature that I have, not sure you have this, is an extra-low heat setting for delicates, in addition to the normal low heat option. Haven't used that yet either but I imagine will be useful for some of my wife's clothes. I really dislike air-drying as I have really not a lot of room, even with a folding drying wrack, having that out and her trying to get around in a wheelchair would be difficult.

I would always use the WS setting unless I was leaving the house or going to bed and had no intention of unloading the dryer soon after it was done, you are not supposed to set there and listen to the dryer starting and stopping, but rather get off your a.. and unload it and put the clothing away, but if you get distracted it really helps keep the clothing from starting to get wrinkled.

Correction...

Sorry guys, I gave the wrong model number. That was the one found online, but I was able to have it read directly from the dryer today. The one I have is WED5000DW, which I believe is newer than the WED4900XW, but otherwise I don't think theres' much of a difference, except my wrinkle shield is 90 minutes instead of 40. I just used that feature for the first time this afternoon.
