You may remember back at the beginning of October I went to Tucson and brought back a 1964 yellow Maytag set. Then on the the way home stopped off to look at this Westinghouse Spacemate washer...........

Well...... I've been in contact with the owner of the yellow Westy over the last number of weeks. He finally called, dropped his price and said, it's yours if you want it. So yesterday on my way back from Phoenix, I once again stopped in the city of Fontana. But this time I picked up the OTHER Westy and brought it home.

So... allow me introduce you too my two Westys!

(actually I have three Westy's now (the little coin-op, bolt down too) but that will screw up my thread, so SHHHHH!)

How does the door latch work? The handle / lever is missing. This metal sticking out appears to be fixed to the door (I can't get it to move) and can't get the door open. Any suggestions?

I tried plugging in and turning the timer, but nothing. I assume it's because these two wires are off the timer. The connectors are broken so I'll have to replace them in order to get the wires to stay on.

A fruitful trip!

I can just see it now. Head out the window, tongue and ears flapping in the wind! Too bad you didn't have Westie along for the ride... LOL!

This machine looks to be a neat one. Ahhhh, the Westinghouse speed shifter. THAT brings back memories. I'm trying to remember how the latch works. I thought I remembered there being a door release button along the top of the door... I'll call you soon and we can brain storm!

Now you got a washing pal !

How did the dog come into play ...did he just strolled in, and came up to you with the washer ?

Can't wait to see that washer working .

Very nice story Kevin.

Never seen that model work before.

I'm glad someone picked up that machine, it would have been a shame to see it go to the crusher. Actually those pictures of the insides look pretty good.

When you first posted I though this would be a good parts donor to someone who had another but it definitly looks to be able to be restored in its own right.

Glad you got it.

There is supposed to be a white plastic piece that fits over the metal that is sticking out. You pushed the white plastic piece toward the door to release the latch. Maybe with a pair of heavy gloves, you could grap hold of the door and be able to push in hard enough on the metal piece to open it. If the latch piece does not move, shoot some WD-40 in along side it.

Kevin, there was a plastic tab over the 2 prongs you put your fingers on the glass and squeezed the bar toward your fingers with your thumb. The "catch" for the door was metal as well and the prongs/with the plastic bar clicked as it closed over the metal catch. All of these parts were metal in later years the "catch" became plastic especially on the later machines. I do not know if it was because plastic was cheaper or because of child entrapment laws. Hope this makes sense. Nice finds, both westy's and the combo. ****** your door on this spacemate is "side swinging, with the hinges on the right. alr

How does it get away without tub ballast? Slantys had them, even my '98 Frigiwhite with shocks has them. Otherwise the internals are scarcely changed from 1955. Looks like they did away with the flex shaft pump drive, facing the pump out the back. And there's that spin solenoid that makes anybody nearby jump when it comes on.

Kevin

You might try placing the machine against the wall (so it doesn't move away from you) and firmly push in the door at the latch

point while you are simultaneously pushing the " uncovered " metal "button" to the right. It may relieve a bit of the " locking "

pressure for easier button pushing. I have the dryer in white ; the famous " yard flocker " (no lint sccreen kit). Get two boots if you

can please.....

Pretty nifty Thanksgiving scores , Westy looks like a good boy too!

Kevin, WHAT are you feeding that puppy? If he grows into those paws (and he will), he's gonna be a big boy. I love a Lab.

Best of Luck with the "Woof" and the Washer!

Hi Kevin, I, too, have never watched one of these Spacemates in operation, and hope you will get yours up to the task. It looks like both "Westy's" will give you a run for your money, and the dog is adorable!

A big thank you to: Tom, arl2903 and Darrel for the info about the door latch! Boy do I feel silly! For some reason I didn't think to push the “button” in toward the window, I was trying to push it back toward the body of the washer (Duh!).

Anyway, after wiping out all the dust, it looks to be in extremely good condition inside!
