Kevin, there was a plastic tab over the 2 prongs you put your fingers on the glass and squeezed the bar toward your fingers with your thumb. The "catch" for the door was metal as well and the prongs/with the plastic bar clicked as it closed over the metal catch. All of these parts were metal in later years the "catch" became plastic especially on the later machines. I do not know if it was because plastic was cheaper or because of child entrapment laws. How does it get away without tub ballast? Slantys had them, even my '98 Frigiwhite with shocks has them. Otherwise the internals are scarcely changed from 1955. Looks like they did away with the flex shaft pump drive, facing the pump out the back. And there's that spin solenoid that makes anybody nearby jump when it comes on.

You might try placing the machine against the wall (so it doesn't move away from you) and firmly push in the door at the latch
point while you are simultaneously pushing the " uncovered " metal "button" to the right. It may relieve a bit of the " locking "
pressure for easier button pushing. I have the dryer in<span style="background-color: #ffffff;"> white ; the famous " yard flocker " (no lint sccreen kit). Get two boots if you</span>

Anyway, after wiping out all the dust, it looks to be in extremely good condition inside!

Kevin, glad you got the westy door open. I am not sure but "style" could be whether you got the metal top for the washer or not. If you planned to use them stacked you did not receive a top for the washer. The matching dryer is actually upside down on the washer if stacked, if side x side installation, you received the top for the washer. For side by side installation the dryer is turned right side up and simply rotate the "WESTINGHOUSE" panel, the clothes dryer logo, the metal top and the timer dial 180 degrees. I think this was the only dryer ever devised to work upside down in a stacked installation. alr.
