My mother bought PDQ. It was chocolate granules, came a glassjar, and I think there was a pink rabbit on the lable. Wasn't as good as Herseys, but was much faster to mix up. I can recall sprinkling PDQ on my vanilla ice cream too.

Rickr PDQ

I had forgotten all about PDQ, Dad called it pretty d##n quick, came in strawberry too, IIRC. Thanks alr2903

You must have been watching the History channel special yesterday on Chocolate! I saw that show too. Never knew it was so challenging to make, and that chocolate/candy manufacturing had such an interesting history.

...I still remember the

"Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't"

and the Chorus of people singing

"Hershey's the great American Chocolate bar!"

Maybe it's one age, or just plain ignorance, what is "Fox's U-Bet" and "Hot-Shot"? For that matter, what is an egg cream?

Growing up we had Hershey's (in the can), but sometimes Bosco (tall glass bottle). Never liked Nestle's Quick as it was loaded with sugar (suspect that is why Mama didn't either).

Yes, have been to Hershey Town in PA. It was a school outing combined with a visit to Amish Town (where we had lunch). We only did the Hershey plant, not the famous amusement park (which was surprised to find out from a PBS program was segregated until rather recently).

After taking a tour of the Hershey plant, all us children were allowed to visit the company store and buy goodies. Despite warnings from the adults about consuming large amounts of chocolate during the trip/bus ride home (it was June after all, and quite warm, IIRC), some children would not be told, and needless to say the trip home on certian buses was NOT pleasant. My seat mate, a good friend at the time was woofing done those extra king-sized Hershey bars as if there was no tomorrow. Not half way home she began to take on a rather odd colour. Told her if she got sick all over my nice new outfit, I'd bop her one, so she'd better start making for the bus lavatory.

Launderess (aka - no thank you ma'am, I might get my dress dirty)

I am really, really surprised-!

An "Egg Cream" is sort of a chocolate soda, most commonly associated with (historically) Jewish run candy stores and delicatessens in New York City.

It has neither egg, nor cream in it, but is considered to be so lush in texture that either one of them was alleged to be an ingredient.

It's basically a large shot of chocolate syrup, a bit of milk (to dilute), filled with a larger shot of charged (carbonated) water.

Fox's U-Bet is a thin, Kosher certified chocolate syrup used primarily in the construction of egg creams.

For further information, Jane and Michael Stern's "Square Meals" has a charming short article on egg creams.

what is HotShot??

Hot Shot was an brand of chocolate syrup sold in a pressurized can. One turned it upsided down over a glass of milk and pushed the button. The pressurized syrup "shot" into the glass and mixed with the milk, requiring no stirring. The product wasn't on the market long...

Big Shot was along the same lines as Hot Shot. Maybe the same thing? The best part was the design of the can: the cap was a metal dome with a face on it. The can had a drawing of the body of a soda jerk.
There was also a product called Jack Frosted, but I can't remember what the can looked like.

ooopppsss!!!!

I was wrong....it is BIG Shot, not HOT Shot...thinking now that Hot Shot is a bug killer. IIRC, Big Shot hit the market about the same time as "Clanky".....
