A107 Machine conversion to A408

I recieved the total control panel A608 today. Obviously an A608 is the larger capacity and the two speed motor. I will be getting a new 2 speed motor so the contol panel wires and functions mirror up. Since the tub in a standard capacity and the buttons on the new "dash" go from S to XL, will this make a difference with the smaller tank? Will it just gradate 4 levels instead of 3 on the smaller tub? I can pull the button switch from the old A107 and put it on instead, but 4 levels is what I am hoping for, since I want a machine to do mulitiple size delicate loads with slow speed and spin option. Right next to this machine I have the XL capacity A408 single speed that I restored for big items, colored, jeans, linens. Your thoughts on the water level switich?

I think you will have a flood. THe four button water level measures out 40 gallons, as opposed to 36. (or 34) You might be able to tweek the adjustment screw, but guaranteed flood if you don't.

The last time I adjusted one, I found a small turn of the screw played a big role in the water level...so go easy.
When you get it where you want, a drop of fingernail polish (something tasteful) will hold it.

It does not measure out 40 gallons at once. That's for the total cycle. The standard tub holds around 16 gallons, the DEEP tub, about 18 or 19. You could try turning the adjustment screw to lower all 4 settings. The thing is that lowering all 4 settings will leave you with a very low small load fill that will result in harsher agitation, even at slow speed which is the only speed you should use with this setting. The best way to buffer the agitator's action on delicates is to use more water. The pushbutton Maytags used the high water level on the Delicates cycle with slow agitation because of this. If it would not bother you, I would go with the three buttons from the smaller tub because you cannot gently wash delicates in a Maytag with the lowest setting of the 4 button water level switch. The original DEEP tub only had 3 water levels. If you want really gentle washing, and a shot at the Dr. Frankenstein award, it would be interesting to see if you could combine the slower speed agitation with the Fabric Matic timer's delicate agitation during which it alternates agitation with soaking. You would have to watch and see if the short periods of slow agitation would be enough to mix the detergent and pull everything under water.

It sounds like fun, combining the fabric-matic dial with two speed action for a true gentle cycle with occasional agitation.(Why it almost would be hand wash) Once I get the two speed motor, I assume the buttons regular and gentle control it, and not the timer. It would be easy to put in the 3 button water level instead of the 4, the wiring leads are identiacal in color and the spacing is the same. In the meantime, much cabinet painting and rust removal to be done.

Actually, after looking at the back of the Gentle and Regular buttons, there are wires: three wires, an orange, which goes directly to the motor, a yellow which goes to the timer and a double black, one from the piggyback on the button back to the timer, the other going directly to the motor. If these wire connections are not available on the A107 fabric matic timer, how will the A107 timer tell the thing to agitate or spin with the two options to do so if I put the buttons in?
