A906 Service Details

A few ordered parts arrived couple days ago, including a tub top seal. I popped the tub top yesterday for a preliminary look. As I suspected, the inner basket is scraping slightly against the tub, or rather against the side of the removable top, for a few revolutions at the start of spin, until centrifugal force evens it out. Either the basket is sitting slightly catterwompus in the tub, or the outer tub is slightly out-of-round. Or is it a problem with the drive shaft/bearings/support?

Interesting that the space between inner basket and outer tub is very small.

That space is adjustable,loosen the clamp,and the top can be moved up a bit.

No one has a suggestion or comment? Is it considered normal for the inner basket to be off-center in the outer tub?

Hey Glenn,

The only thing that has come to mind is that the basket is slightly off from being level, and the outer tub top was also slightly off as well, so when the tub would revolve, it would only rub on the front spot. When you spin the tub by hand, does it appear to be off center a little bit? If so, loosen the inner tub nut a bit, and throw a level on the inner tub. Make sure it is level on two planes, and tighten the nut. If this doesn't fix it, then I am guessing that the inner tub may be slightly out of round. But the outer tub top may also having something to do with it as well.

Replace the tub support and seal/boot assembly if the basket appears to be crooked in the tub. It's probably a good idea to do this anyway - new parts are lasting parts and readily available.

The other thing that comes to mind is that the rubber tub-ring seal might have been installed so that it was in between the two parts of the tub instead of sitting on the lip surface of the tub which could cause the space to be narrower than it should be. Overtightening of the clamp may also cause this, especially if the basket isn't perfectly round - not that uncommon.

You wouldn't believe how out-of-round the basket is in my 160 pushbutton washer, but it spins steady and true.

What are all the correct parts at RepairClinic? I have a couple service manuals, but no parts lists. Not everything at RepairClinic includes a picture, and the numbers from older parts lists may not translate to current. I have a spanner wrench, a new basket nut, and a motor slide kit. Other problem is the agitator won't come out. The A206's agitator popped right out with minimal tugging, but not the A906's.

Here are parts to have on hand for a rebuild inside the tub. Included on this list are the belts and damper kit, just in case.

Thanks for the responses. I think I've found the right items at RepairClinic. Is replacing the tub support/damper assembly also a good idea? Two of the support struts are rusted/corroded from leaking. Centering springs?

I think the damper pads have already been replaced (there's adhesive smeared on the base) but I have no way to know how long ago.

Have a set belts, originally intended for the 206 but it currently doesn't have a motor.

What about any special Maytag tools? I notice an item listed as Tool-install center s[eal].
