I have it

I have it and took Ritalin for it for years. But I stopped it last Nov. and I don't really think I really needed it. I don't need enough energy to paint my attic. But no real bad side effects.....Bill in Az.....

Dealing with Adult People

I have had to deal with other people who probably have some form of ADD, ADHD, etc. Unfortunately, had to part company with a couple of long time guys (twin brothers) due to the fact that these gentlemen are refusing to face reality, even when politely and gently confronted. These guys would fight like spoiled rotten children on the golf course, at each other's homes, and maybe in their church. These guys are almost sixty years old! They have lost jobs and friends over this, among other unrevealed issues in their lives that negatively affect others. True, I cannot force these people to get help, but when their problems do affect me in a bad way, then I am left with no other choice but to take the last resort measure, no matter how upsetting and hurtful this really is. I have known these twins for almost nineteen years.--Laundry Shark

Don't sweat it kqkenmore. Grammar, spelling & punctuation run second place around here. It was obvious in your post what you were asking about. Most of us make mistakes, most of us will admit it. A good rule of thumb for the forum is, if you would not say it to someones face, do not type it here. You typed adult ADD, i don't really see what the problem was with understanding you post. alr2903

After a life of seeming to have to work twice as hard as everyone else to accomplish the same thing I was ordered to read the book "driven to distraction" by my boss. The book covers everything very well and is written by 2 Doctors with ADD.

Stimulant therapy has changed my life for the better. I just wish I had listened to my friends 20 years ago.

I have it, but the medications are too expensive even when I had insurance I couldn't afford it. I can't remember what the med was but it was over $100.00 a month when I had insurance.

Jim this is not meant to be hurtful or offensive towards you or anyone.

There is always money for that which WANT to do. Usually "I cant't afford it" means "it's not important to me".

Case in point, I have relative that would rather buy "nesting material" (throw rugs, bedsheets, curtains, towels even clothing) even when she has tons of it already but WILL NOT buy ("I can't afford") a l new hot water heater when the existing is leaking, patch a bad/leaking roof or fix any other sort of larger hosehold issue where not doing so may result in burning down or flooding her house.

Listen, If I could take something that would make me more tolerable in the eyes of others, I'd be on it like white on rice. (Poison, however, is not an option). *LOL*

I appear to have have S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and take over-the-couter SAMe ("SAMMY") which helps a great deal with the winter-time "BLAHS". Others in my family have it, but for me denying the posssibility serves no purpoo. I sorta know when I can be around others and when it is best that I am not. I keep it MY problem and do my best not to let it affect my interpersonal relationships.

Add "people" between "which" and "want".

I did a little googling on the subject, and besides the meds, regular daily physical exercise is supposed to be very helpful in alleviating the symptoms. There are two main types of ADD: the inattentive type, and the hyperactive/impulsive type. Men may tend towards the hyperactive/impulsive type, which responds well to the increase in physical activity.

Also mentioned as helpful are: stress management, meditation, biofeedback, counseling and teaching of how to manage time and plan one's tasks while leaving some spontaneity.

Personally I think the less meds one must take, the better. The exercise treatment has many benefits besides reducing ADD. Your mileage may vary.

Please, no offence is intended to any well meaning but naive individuals.

I must state in the most forceful way possible that when ADD/ADHD becomes a consuming force in your life DR. GOOGLE AND HIS HIPPY B.S. IS A FREEKIN QUACK!!!!

I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but, I have 20+ years of wreckage to show what happens when a person that needs stimulant therapy listens to the “All you need is organic food, exercise, No white sugar, No Glutens, No Video Games , No Television, No Rock music, ect ect ect crowd.

What you do need is an ADD/ADHD support group in your area. There is something very empowering about being around others that know first hand what you are experiencing and these individuals have the best prospective.

You have options, one of them is medication, based on the tight financial situation that you describe there may possible help through patent assistance programs from the pharmaceutical companies but you will need to be diagnosed first.

When needed I take “Adderall” it is the Cadillac but spendy and by some reports is being force-fed to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan I have mixed feelings about this but if it keeps them alive Im reluctant to fault the practice.

Good Luck

The meds are an issue. They are stimulants, and are hard on the circulatory system and on the endocrine system in general. However, if you have experienced debilitating mental issues, then the choice is not that hard. Oh, and the Vitamin D bit for SAD is so obvious, I can't believe it never crossed my mind, or appeared in the literature. My mom recommended it, and I (and my partner) think it made a big difference this past winter. Time will tell. Not all vits are made alike, I recommend, ok damn, don't have the bottle, It is an orange label and I think it is "Now" brand...matt
