I recently purchased a round tub (red and white)Maytag wringer washer similar to the one we used when I was growing up. I THINK it's a N or N2 model. The serial number is E314494V and has a blue agitator. Would that make it a N or N2?

The washer runs, agitates, and the rollers work. The bottom roller(white one)is a little wrinkled but not bad. There is some oil leaking out of it some place and I believe it has a pump.

I live in the piedmont section of North Carolina near Winston Salem. I'd like to get the washer looked at...tuned up so to speak with a new belt and gone over real well. Is there anyone on the site that lives near me and knows of a repair shop in this area that knows anything about them. Any help will be appreciated.

It sounds like you are describing a N2LP. That serial number indicates manufacture in November of 1956. If the agitation knob and wringer release bar are red that should be correct. The blue (turquoise) agitator is a later replacement. The original agitator for that machine would have been made out of black bakelite. Bakelite cracks and shatters pretty easily if dropped so it's not a shock that it was replaced. The turquoise agitator is made from polypropylene and is much stronger in that regard!

A question for you...did you or anyone else transport this washer on its side recently? If so, it is possible that oil leaked out of the breather hole on the top of the transmission. If, after wiping ALL traces of oil off of the transmission and underside of the machine there is no more leakage that it likely what happened. This not usually a big deal because rarely does enough oil leak out to compromise the operation of the transmission. It just makes a mess! If there continues to be leakage there is a bigger problem with a seal that will need to b looked at if you want to keep this machine going for the long term.

Thank you for your information. To my knowledge the washer has been upright. I bought it at a friends yard sale. His dad used it in his shop to wash towels, rags, etc. As far as I know it's been in the shop for many years.

Me and two others loaded it keeping it upright and I transported it home. It's still on the truck tied down.

I'm just wanting to get it checked out real well before trying to use it. Thanks again for your information.
