AEG 16830 washer/dryer

Hi to Everyone,

I was after some advice. My partner has a four/five year old AEG 16830 Lavamat Turbo Washer/dryer. It's been a great machine. Recently tho every now and then it would make a metal like scraping noise during the wash/rinse part when the drum turns. The spin cycles are still almost silent as is the drum when the dryer is used. I have noticed it's started to do this on almost every occasion now but again, only during the wash/rinse section and never on the spin or dryer cycle.

I wondered if anyone had any idea what it might be? Is it likely the bearings?

I've called AEG and they want £100 call out charge, plus parts, plus labour cost. If this is a sealed drum is it worth having this fixed or should i replace?

I've uploaded a video hoping you can detect the sounds.

Any help would be appreciated. If it is the bearings I'm not sure I want to spend out - what would likely be - £300+ having it fixed.

That doesn't sound like a bad bearing to me. A bad bearing would probably start making noise on the spin cycle first anyway. I have no clue though about what it could be.

Me i would say that after 5 years you would be better off replacing your machine as for 300 euros + tax you would have a brand new machine and would not have to worry for at least 10 years and this time of year you always start seeing washers on sale and the model that i would recomend you buying if you went to stay in the aeg brand is this one here is the link if you went to look at other models as well.

Sounds like there might be an object stuck between inner and outer drums. Quite often it's a bra wire or something similar. Check round the holes in the drum and if you're lucky there might be a bit sticking out. Otherwise it's sump hose off and hope for the best.

I guess you don't understand. We are talking about a washer/dryer combo here, not a washer. Besides that Steve is in Australia, it makes no sense to go buy a washer in Canada.

I was thinking an object between inner and outer drum too. It makes sense because the machine only makes the sounds when there is water in the drum, not when there is no water that moves the foreign object around.

Well my almost 3 years old aeg (L76850) also makes that same strange sound.
Mine however only makes this noise at the start of a program and only at the start of each tumble. After some minutes it disappears.
I have always wondered what could cause this noise but because the machine works flawless I never thought that it was something serious but now I am starting to doubt.
I am going to see if it gets worse and then call an aeg engineer because I still have 2 years of warranty.

There might be something sort of caught in the sump and rising up a bit when there is water in the machine so that it is moved by the water into a position to scrape the drum. Damn shame new machines don't have the sump strainer at the bottom of the outer tub for quick checking like Bendixes had.

if washer drum has detatchable paddles you might be able to remove one to
reveal an opening to inspect the outer tub.
My splendide combomatic 6100 was making what sounded like a metallic scraping
sound-it was just a lamination buzzing in the motor field(brushed motor)the
noise stopped and hasn't returned..

I might try and take the sump hose off today then. To me ( no expert though) it sounds almost like the motor. We done three loads yesterday and it only made the noise on the heavy loads and when it was on the final rinse of the lighter loads so it seems to have something to do with how much the motor has to work again ie: heavy towel load or when the drum has a lot of water in it.

It sounds like if the belt is sliping as it tumbles

Would it make the metal grinding noise if the belt was slipping though? Also, if the bearings have started to go would they make a noise occasionally or all the time and just get louder over time?

Just a thought......

Does this machine have a brush or brushless motor? The video is a bit too quiet to tell and with AEG's having decent sound insulation I'm not sure.

Only wondering this because the sound is exactly what my Zanussi used to do when starting a tumble, esspecially with heavier loads - that had a brush motor. A few other friends of mine who have Zanussi machines make this noise too, and it dosnt seem to cause them any trouble so I personally wouldnt worry about it too much , thats if it does have a brush motor at least

When ours used to make this noise you could also see faint sparks reflecting of the ground if u were to look underneath the machine, I did phone Zanussi about that and was told that its pretty normal for brush motors to spark slightly which I already knew, but on previous washers it was never so apparent

Also, not to forget internally Aeg's and Zanussi's are more or less identical so it could be possible it has the same, or similar motor to what mine did

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your input - It's an inverter motor on this machine. As I say, it's still almost silent when spinning, even at 1600 and when you turn the drum there's no noise, only on wash/rinse tumble. It's five years old and I wanted to rule out bearing trouble before I get AEG out as they charge £108 for call out in London area, plus labour, plus parts and I can pick up the same replacement machine for £500..

Sorry I couldnt be of more help .... Like the others say hopefully its just something caught between the two drums that you could get to yourself with a bit of luck

The call out charges are somewhat excessive these days which is a shame!

the main reason for this is if i base myself on canadian appliance is because techs today are no longer intressted in fixing older machine if a canadian tech would come in and fix my washer they would tell me that i am better off buying a new machine i think thats why they charge high price for service calls.

4 or 5 years of age is, in the majority of peoples minds, NOT an old machine....particularly that when this machine was new it would have cost more than CAD$1000.

 

...AND in many country's you can't go and simply replace a machine for $300 as seems to be the case in North America and possibly Canada....
