Our first autowasher in 1972 was an AEG LAvamat Princess-S. It was cold fill only with an unusual design of induction motor, the motor was square in shape, with what looked like 2 separate sets of windings. It was an induction motor which was able to spool up for the spin, no complex DAF-Variomatic style transmission, just simple belt drive. I remember the screech at the end of the spin cycle when the motor switched in the low speed windings and the rotor acted as a brake, rapidly slowing down the tub. The machine is not like any Lavamat I see on this site, in fact, it looks identical to a few AEG Domina-L models here (single programmer dial on left, which was pulled to switch on, and a square amber pilot neon with two matching buttons on the right). Sturdy machine, we changed 2 sets of bearings, a timer and a pump in its 22 year lifetime, in terms of washing done, you could add on another 8 years! I remember watching it go through its cycle as a 6/7 year old, it also had high water fill levels. Detergent drawer on top cover. Timer made a regular metallic clicking noise as it progressed through the programme.
