On this website I see a lot of the GE filter-flo thing where water is pumpted into the tub passing through the filter thing on the top of the agitator. Wasn't there once an agitator that would force water up through the agitator to be sprayed out into a similar filter at the top of the agtitator? Which machines did that? Just curious.

Hotpoints from the early sixties to the early seventies did that too. They called it a fountain filter. Water got sucked up through a series of holes in the base of the agitator and then got regurgitated out of the top of the agitator into a filter pan that was essentially similar to the ones on the GE's. According to the 1969 edition of Consumer's Reports, these had to be taken apart periodically and cleaned. They seriously downrated Hotpoints for many sins, that being one of them.

what they might of been thinking

probably thinking an added feature without a lot of extra cost or engineering. I would imagine GE had the filter flo "the moving never clogging filter" patented & trademarked so that would of put a stop to any duplication of that design. So many here mention if you have pets a Filter Flo is hard to beat to remove pet hair.

Hotpoint fountain filter

The Hotpoint filter works great and I've never in 16 years of using the machine had it clog. It is as effective as a real GE filter flow (as long as you're on high agitation speed). It is a fairly sophisticated positive displacement pump housed inside the agitator which includes inlet and outlet check valves and a pump vane that operates as a stator. This pump works on both stroke directions (unlike the Norge design).

Whirlpool filters

GE's filter flo is the best design in my opinion, but what about the Whirlpool and Kenmore design with the filter in the top of the tup that was removable?
