Air Fryers

Have someone requesting one for a Christmas giftie.  The Farberware model of request has some bad reviews (some DOAs and failures within months, imprecise temp control and timer knob breaking, non-stick finish chips/peels quickly).  Performance reports range from poor and irritating to good with specific foods and after experimentation with settings.

What's the word?

Farberware NEVER again in my house after I bought a toaster oven when I was living in Dallas and it tended to start by itself (maximum temp) in the middle of the night.

Word, there: Unplug when not in use... I do that with all my small appliances, as any accidental start-up can strike, regardless of whether or not the unit is well-attended...

I have a Philips XL. It works well, but is rather hard to keep clean. There are a lot of problems with smoke too with that particular model. I belong to a Dutch Facebook Airfryer group. The XL model is the model with the highest failure rate. Philips has replaced a lot of them. It looks like the later made models aren't much better. A lot of people reported good results with cheaper brands. Most of them not available on the American market as far as I can see.

A couple of weeks ago I got a Nuwave using a 20% off one item at Bed Bath and Beyond. I really like roasted veggies and thought this might be a good way, based on infomercials to make them quickly without heating the oven. Well, it is. I toss the veggies with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing from ALDI and follow the direction that came with the Nuwave. They come out perfect. Tried chicken breasts last evening. Came out nicely browned and very juicy in only 12 min. This is a great addition to my kitchen..

I got the one that has an "oven door" set up instead of a pull out basket. It does hold a huge amount. Mine came with a rotisserie which is good for fries and breaded "stuff". It does a good job but I'm glad it was a gift. I do like it for shish k bob.

Tom, which one of the "air fryers" did you get with the "oven door"?   

 

My other half likes to deep fry things often and I'd prefer to avoid a lot of fried food for health reasons.  As such, I've been looking into one of these "air fryers" (a misnomer, really a mini convection oven, since you can't "fry" with air).  The thing is I don't have tons of counter space, so I want to get one with multiple functions, rather than a "uni-tasker" as Alton Brown would call it.   

 

Most searches I've done don't reveal the lower priced models, but I did find a couple around $100 (+/-).  However the reviews I've been seeing for the cheaper oven door models with the plastic exterior haven't been favorable, many complaining of a "burning plastic smell" while in use. 

 

I like the look of the Farberware model below ($70), but my friend Thomas is saying "oh hell no!"   So I may have to bite the bullet and buy the more expensive $200 Cuisinart model TOA-60 (pic #2), though I would love to have the (Rolls Royce) $400 Breville model (pic 3).

Kevin, neither. Mine is a POWER XL. It came with rotiss, basket, skewers, six shelves has a light and some other stuff. Works well. Haven't tried to dehydrate anything yet. My Nieces make jerky regularly in theirs. (they gave me mine). It comes with 3 different cook books. It will take frozen bread dough and bake it perfectly in 20 minutes.

I bought my brother a once used Farberware model for $20
He is quite pleased with it, he uses it daily to roast Brussels sprouts or asparagus, and often baked chicken wings, which come out very crispy as we like them. Also it produces cheese sticks better than in a regular oven or a deep fryer

I may consider one myself, but I want the Cuisinsrt like Kevin shared

I bought the Cuisinart a couple months ago. It is a convection toaster oven air fryer and works great. I bought it to replace 2 appliances (toaster over & Philips air fryer) so that I could free up a little space on the counter. French fries in the Cuisinart take about 15 minutes whereas in the Philips they would take 28 minutes. The fan in the Cuisinart is quieter than the fan in the Philips.
