So lately I've been on a bit of an alarm clock kick you could say.
Now, I've always used a basic red LED alarm clock. I don't need an alarm to wake up, and if I happen to need to get up earlier than normal, I set my phone alarm set low so as not to wake up anyone else in the house.
But a few interesting clocks turned up at Goodwill for cheap and I thought I'd try them out.
The first is a GE alarm clock radio that is also a cordless phone. The phone part is ok (it actually had a new battery in it). Caller ID shows on both handset and clock display. The radio reception on FM is surprisingly good, it's digitally tuned and even has 5 presets. It also has two speakers so sound quality is not bad at all. Unfortunately the AM external antenna was missing so I get nothing on that. It even has both a headphone jack and an aux jack so I could plug my phone in to play over it.
The biggest issue I have with it though, is the display. It has a white lettering with a bright blue lighted background. At night, it's blinding. Even with it dimmed down to the lowest setting, it still bothers me.
Another unit popped up as well. This time a Sony Dream Machine. Nice looking compact aluminum case alarm clock radio. It too gets good reception on FM, but again missing AM antenna. Its speaker is very small and tinny though. It also has an aux input (actually a cable underneath the unit). It even has a projector to display the time on the ceiling, as well as a built in thermometer. It has 5 nature sounds you can fall asleep or wake to. Gimmicky, but I did like the rain and brook sounds.
Again though, the problem is it has a blue backlit display, this time black on blue that even dimmed is too bright. You can turn the backlight off, but then you can't read it in the dark.
Finally, is a new Emerson Smartset alarm clock. This one sets itself as soon as you plug it in (if the battery is good). Really good reception on this too (it does not have AM at all though). It has both an aux jack and Bluetooth. You can actually play/pause and change music tracks on your phone/MP3 player from the clock radio itself. It even has an LED night light under the unit you can turn on. This time the clock has a blue on black display. But again, it's too bright!
I don't get why, but blue is just bothersome to me in the dark. So I keep going back to my trusty and simple red LED clock.
