ALDI Tandil vs Boiled Over Steel Cut Oats (shoulda taken pictures)

When we retire a white bath towel, it's laundered and added to the wicker hamper in the back of the closet as another big honkin' rag.

I felt like steel cut oats for lunch so instead of assembling the stoneware-bowl-in-pressure-cooker apparatus, I foolishly followed the microwave instructions for a single serving on the canister, believing a VISIONS 2.5l pot would contain the foaming, even with the addition of a tablespoon of butter (said to reduce foaming and add flavor).

Well before the cooking time was over, the turntable in the SHARP Carousel was flooded with the stuff so I used one of the trusty rag towels to absorb the mess and another to sop up the rest. By laundry day, the towel that bore the brunt was crusty and stiff.

Into the Frigidaire front-loader they went with my usual three-towel shower linen rotation, another towel that serves as a bath rug, a face cloth and a week's worth of white cotton-poly socks.

The washer's dispenser was dosed with 1.5 oz. of ALDI Tandil ("compare to Tide") and the bleach chamber filled to the MAX line with Tandil chlorine bleach.

Heavy Duty cycle, hot wash/cold rinse, maximum soil level, extended spin at maximum speed and, holy moly, it was as if it never happened.

we did a test comparison once during an event.....

poured out both Tide and Tandil......

both looked the same, same texture, and smelled the same....and seemed to clean the same.....

if we didn't know any better, would have sworn it was the same stuff....

now many companies will claim their stuff is not made or produced by the same factory.....I would have to argue that one.....

Seabrook Brothers, in Seabrook, New Jersey.....just 5 miles from my house.....for example, produces Ocean Spray Cranberry drinks.......the first part of any batch is somewhat cloudy, and bottled for store brand generic use, once the liquid flows clear, then the bottles are switched out to Ocean Sprays trademark bottle....I know this because my Aunt works there, and she is the one who switches the bottles out....

you can't always believe there are separate manufacturers for all items...or private label items......a lot of times, one manufacturer makes one product for all distributions.....maybe a few changes like color or scents, but the base is most likely the same exact thing....

Their washing detergents are ......

 

In Aust we have three levels of product...

<li>Laundrite - Lemon scented old fashioned huge box powder & a apple scent liquid both cheap and not effective at much. Equate to a basic home brand product.</li>
<li>Almat - concentrate powder and liquid in three scents made for both top loader and front loaders. I equate it to Surf </li>
<li>Trimat  three variants plus a sensitive product... liquid plus super concentrate versions equate to a Omo or Radiant</li>
</ol>
Aldi have tried selling concentrate gels but they never seen to sell well and end up in discount baskets.

Steel cut oats in the microwave.

I've figured out a method that works for me. Fortunately my Panasonic (NN-SN797S) allows me to set this up without running back every few minutes.

Oats and water for about 1.5 litres of oatmeal with a dash of salt in a TWO lire pyrex bowl, uncovered. I measure by eye... blame my grandmother.

2 minutes at full power
3 minutes at 90% power
4 minutes at 80%
5 minutes at 70%
etc. until cooked to taste.

I haven't stood there with my stop watch and measured the amount of free water on top, but steel cut oats don't seem to cook/absorb water more quickly at higher power levels. I also frequently add about a 1/4 cup of pasteurized egg whites to give it some ufta.
