Most of our Aldi stores have been remodeled and made larger. One store was completely tore down, and the new store will be much lager than the original store. What really shocked me with Aldi is the difference in pricing between Iowa and Illinois. At the Iowa store I can a bag of salad for $0.49 in Illinois it was $1.19, other item are higher in Illinois as well. I guess we will be shopping in Iowa, plus in Iowa there is no tax on food items.
I don't know from ALDI, but I support any retailer that WalMart fears.
I don't like them because, according to their web site, they don't take credit cards. And I did that "look-see" the last time this store chain was in discussion here. I odn't like to carry much cash with me.
And y'all may bust Wal-Mart's chops, but I have a choic of two stores in town whicha re the same chain (HEB) or the WM SuperCenter (plus Sam's). The grocery stores stopped having Biz on their shelves and haven't repleneshed the stock. And I was down to my last dosages for 3 loads. So last Sun. I went to WM. I bought 3 boxes of Biz--I swear by the stuff. Also got some other food items that are a bit unusual or the other store(s) doesn't offer for anywhere near the same price except when on a BIG sale. It was the first time I'd set foot in WM since last Oct. or Nov. (Plus the bubba bears are hot at WM!!)
Not a big fan of ALDI,
but I do like their upscale cousin or brother (it's in Wikipedia, among other places,) Trader Joe's!
If it weren't for the fact that the nearest one is half-hour or so north of me, I'd do most of my shopping at Trader Joe's!

I just went to Aldi tonight--don't go too often. I purchased a $0.78 of Spaghetti and meatballs--just on a whim and a desire to relive my youth. It's obviously made by Chefboyardee.....exactly the same, except it was not $1.19. I've never been disappointed in any house brand from Aldi.

Aldi's is very good on prices, but some of their food items have an "off" taste to them (chocolate syrup, flavored drink mix (this stuff is HORRIBLE)), and their version of Gatorade is packed with HFCS, but not too terribly bad if you drink it over ice cubes. I wish they'd get in whole wheat pastas and those types of items. Dr. has told me to shy away from the white stuff and go with whole wheat instead.

There is maybe 2 or so aldis in our town. I never seemed to like them as much as other big stores.
They are not doing very well here either. Loosing much business. Not to mention that the locations of them are in horrible poverty areas it seems.

Aldi is OK, but something about their stores turns me off. Either it's the colors, lighting or something, but I find it oppressive and want to get out as soon as I can. Everything has a "gold" tone to it, sort of like being overwhelmed by harvest gold appliances.
It's true they don't take credit cards due to the added fees, but they do take debit cards. Quality of products is not that bad, but the savings are not enough to warrant driving the extra 1/2 mile beyond my local Meijer's.

Aldi is okay for certain things. I find that in the Atlanta area there are just as better bargains at farmer market stores. One of them is called "Big H". Their prices and quality of selections are fantastic! Actually amazing. So I go there instead of Aldi's.
Aldi's here in the Atlanta area does accept credit / debt cards.

Lawrence, I think the more time you spend in TJ's, the more you'll be careful when shopping there. The novelty wears off and as with any other retailer, it becomes a convenience thing.
I'll buzz over to TJ's when I think about it for some special items, but for serious grocery shopping I'll drive a little further to the supermarket.

Have been shopping at Aldi for years...
Aldi is always the first stop on my weekly grocery shopping jaunt, and is where I purchase all of my basics. I've always been pleased by the quality and price. As for payment methods, I pay by debit card.

I have been to the Aldi in Countryside, IL with some German friends. They were astonished to find out it looks just like a smaller Aldi store you would find in Germany, right down to the tile on the floor and the color of the walls.
There are no shelves in the store. Everything is just kind of stacked on the floor between 3 or 4 rows. There is a refrigerator in the back that has dairy products. And they have a small produce section that is non refrigerated.
The place makes Walmart look like a Neiman-Marcus.

Went to an Aldi in Germany. I think I was more impressed with the selection of foods over there.
But they do share some similar products, so you can find more European style foods in Aldi than you can find in most other places. I think that is why most people find it "different" Well its a German based company for starters. They are geared to the European market.
