Help! Can someone tell me why my Amana bottom freezer refrigerator is leaking water every so often from the bottom right corner? It's about 18 years old and there are no kids going in and out of it constantly. It has been well taken care of. I did notice this morning that the bottom floor under the basket has a large amount of ice. What could be causing this? I know about mixers and vacuum cleaners but nothing about refrigerators.

Yes, it does have an ice-maker but,

I don't use it anymore. Actually, I have only used it a few times when the refrigerator was new because the banana-shaped cubes started tasting funny and smelling dreadful. I thought it was from the plastic bin then did some research and found out it was from the minerals in my well water. I do have a whole-house filter but it only filters sediment. I guess well water has this tendency.

Anyway, I could have bought a filter for it but at that time filters attached in the back of the refrigerator making it very cumbersome to change it every time it needed to be changed. So I disconnected the ice-maker. Water filters for refrigerators 18 years ago were not a quick change system like they are now where you simply pop out the old one and pop in a new one in from the front.

So guys, tell me what can I expect to pay for repair costs? And, is it repairable? What is the going rate these days?

What is the best Frig out there that is made by a company that has EXCELLENT customer service?

Here is a pic of the inside of the freezer where you can see an ice edge that has formed at the space in the back under the top shelf.

How does a a defrost drain get plugged? Dust? There are no kids here so it's not opened nearly as much as if it were in a household with kids.

I don't want to put good money after bad for an 18-year old frig..

Frozen Over Or Blocked Drain

To have a good independent out to fix this could cost anywhere from $75-$175.

You could also try shutting down and completely defrosting the freezer and then poring boiling water into the area where the ice is coming from in your picture and see if water starts to show up in the plastic pan behind the grille.

Do note you may have to defrost it turned off with the door open for one or two days unless you want to disassemble the defrost drain area to do it quickly, if a tech comes out to your house they will thaw it out and clear the drain and fix it in less than an hour.

We had a rogue frozen pea block the defrost drain in a fridge once, and it caused a similar situation.  It doesn't take much.

The drain should be visible (when not covered with ice) at bottom rear of the freezer.  If you have one, use a blow dryer to melt the ice so you can check the drain.

Even in..

a self defrosting freezer? The bottom is spotless. There is no drain. Hmmm....
There is what appears to be a ledge at the top edge above the basket.

Yes, the pea was blocking the condensate drain in the freezer on a side-by-side frost free model.  The drain is usually directly below the evaporator on the rear wall of the freezer, whether the freezer is on top, side or bottom.  You may not be able to see the drain without removing some or all of the panel(s) that cover the evaporator, which usually isn't a big deal and can be accomplished with a screw driver or hex-head driver.

If there's no blockage, there may be an issue with the heating element that melts the frost off the evaporator coil.  It might be bad, or the defrost timer could be dead.

The nature of the ice build-up may provide clues.  If it's uniform, the heater/timer could be suspect.  If it appears to be forming at the bottom,  the drain could be.
