Okay, I scouted around a bit. Apparently Amana washers are well known for transmission failure and tub leakage. I can personally attest to the machine being noisy. It's not much quieter than the plastic-tub Kelvinator it replaced, which was sounding it's death rattle every time I ran it. Don't know anything about the dryer. Hopefully these things will give me good service for a while, anyway..
The tranny wasnt the weakest point. Tub seals, pumps and belts. Quiet was not to be used in the same sentance with amana either. The dryers are actually pretty good. Since they are free then that makes them even better even if a repair is needed. As long as its not major.

Bought a pair (Next to TOL Amana's) new in Florida a few years ago---sold them as soon as I could. Washer had problems with the suspension system and tub CONSTANTLY sagged to one side. Amanatag repair man came out no less then three times and kept trying to convince me that was NORMAL for this machine! I had to dust myself off after falling off of that turnip truck but when I did I cussed Amanatag out! Their service was apallingly poor. Problem never fully corrected even with replacement of springs. Dryer had (stainless-steel tub) annoying problem of chipping and breaking buttons on my shirts. I know it was that dryer because I had NEVER had that problem before, or since. Whole expierence was so bad from a customer relations standpoint, I vowed never to BUY another NEW Maytag appliance again, and every opportunity I get I warn others! Be glad yours are free! GOOD LUCK!

If I had to pick a modern TL machine, I'd have to go with Whirlpool/Roper/Kenmore/KitchenAid. That's pretty much all that's left out of the "good" designs.
I thought the TOL Amanas of the late 1990's were neat, with the electronic controls. The best of both worlds--a slow-stroke TL design with many options. I remember looking at one in Sears when I was 10 and pushing a button for spin. Also remembered how quiet (and expensive) it was. Why they discontinued them I will never know...haven't seen one since. Anybody remember these?

I agree with Austin,....The WP family of machines are still pretty good.I bought one of the last of the 90 series toploaders that still let you watch the machine during wash.
It has been a good performer for the last two years.I think that if i was to eventually get another machine,i would delve into fl territory.The Speed Queen fl washers i saw a couple of months back were impressive looking. Solid and simple to use,just hope they make a machine with longer wash times.

Im a GE fan for now. I did like my old KA 960, but it had to go to make room for the old 9904. After the 3rd break down with my sears I gave up on it.

I ran across this site, and as a fan of vintage just about everything, I fell in love with it! Cool restorations you folks have done!
Bass2Dark, with regards to your acquisition of an Amana LWA50AW, I have one as well. Mine was not free, it was an out-of-box sale at Best Buy. It's been through several moves, jostled up and down stairs, and it still is going -- though from the sound of it, you'd think otherwise. However, it has sounded like that since day one, indeed these are noisy machines. (No, that's not a 747 spooling up for takeoff, that's my Amana entering the Spin Cycle).
My plan for this machine has already been spoken by kenmore197 in message #53685 -- the minute this machine dies, it's outta here. I've been thinking about either front loaders, or a combo washer/dryer.

Our ALW880 (3.5 years old) just died this week. Good washer just sorry construction. We just ordered the new 3.5 Frigimore FL. Finally convinced my wife to go front load along with the 3 children that have the smaller Frigemore's. Other 3 will soon go to FL. All big families.
