Amana Radarange Poll:

Love

my chromed out Radarange. It is a Touchmatic II. Near as I can tell, I think it is an RR10. I will try to take a pic of it tomorrow. I wish I could get a manual for it because I know it can do so many fancy things. I just don't know how to set it on different settings. The thing is sooooooo powerful. It was quite the adjustment when I 1st brought it home. On my new-fangled ugly plastic over-the-stove modern microwave I would heat a hotdog from the fridge in 60 seconds. With the chrome-girl my kids forget and a hotdog set on 20 seconds will blow the thing up.

"Are you aware that if someone Googles "Amana Radarange," your site is the first result returned, not Amana's?"

Wow Sandy, I just ran it through Google and sure enough, that's a surprise! By the way, if anyone has trouble with their RR (especially when the Touchmatic panel gives up the ghost) and is told it's not worth fixing, give me a holler. I keep quite a few of these on the road. -C

i have a 1983 RR 810 as daily driver-just love the quality, look, performance, and sound of this unit.my other radar ranges include(not sure of model #s)
-1968
-1970 westinghouse branded
-1980 mechanical control
-1982 mechanical control
All of these are very heavy, but the '68 and '70 have the old electromagnet magnetron field and extra big twin bobbin power transformer are noticably heavier than the later ones...

Hey Mom11

I can help you with the settings - I have owned & used RR 10's continuously since 1981 - and as for he larger question - I prefer touchmatics to dials

Amana's rapid cycling of the magnetron gives very gentle cooking when needed. When I warm up leftover poached fish, the low setting between 2 & 3 does it perfectly. My first was the 8A in 78 or 79 then I went to the RRL10, I think. There were times I used the delayed start feature to program it to have hot rice waiting for me when I got home to eat. Then I just had to zap a couple of leftovers and the meal was ready. I never used the temp probe.

I have the Amana countertop microwave/convection combination with the sideswing door and the 30" Amana range with the micro-thermal oven with the same precise Cookmatic power control for the zapper. It is a nicely featured range, but the oven is poorly insulated. It has a weak broiler so I use one of the Frigidaire ranges for broiling. Broiling in a Frigidaire is like working in front of an open hearth furnace.

Yay!!! Pcasa!

I would love help with my Touchmatic. I think it was make in 1980. What I would really like to know is something as simple as how to thaw meat without having it boil on the outside while being frozen on the inside. How do I set it to any other setting than high? Thanks so much. Oh, and also, for all RR owners: I seem to remember back in the 70's when these came out that they came out with a rotating table for these before they microwaves starting carrying them as standard. Are there those available for our RR now? I would love something like that to get more even heating.

Yikes!

$50 bucks for the micro go round??? And not much cheaper on ebay??? Doesn't make much sense to pay that for a range I paid $7.50 for. I think someone on here should go into business making these. How hard can it be?

Anyway, I took another look at my RR and I don't think it's a RR10. It's very curvy. Isn't the 10 more boxy? And I think I said it was a Touchmatic II. It is not. It just says, Touchmatic. It has thin orange outlines around the numbers. It looks most like the topmost microwave in Cadman's Radarange display. I would pull it out to look at the back plate but I am but a little woman and I can not lift the beasty all by me onesie. She is a mighty beefy od' gal.

CFZ2882, do you have pics of your Westinghouse?

My favorite ones have to be my two Frigidaire RCM-10!

But I really like my RR-2 RR-4D and RR-10 too. All but the 4D get regular use... The 4D is sitting at the top of a refrigerator that's not used for the moment.

I got the RR-4D and the RR-10 thanks to Roger (Firedome). Strangely, two of the rarest ones were found almost locally. The RR-2 was advertised on Kijiji with spelling errors in the name (Amano Radaranger!). It was advertised at $50 and $5 simultaneously on two different ads and unfortunately, I first saw the $50 ad and offered $30! Then I saw the other ad! So I paid 6X more than the asking price but I was still happy about it! The young lady who owned it drove a part of the distance with the oven in her car to meet me at her job!

I got the second Frigidaire after telling someone I know who also likes old appliances about the one I already had (that's from Atlanta GA). He told me he did have the same along with the original box and papers but in non-working condition... Well, it works now that I also have it! Thanks to Cory's repair information on his website (along with a few emails!). The first one I got from Atlanta was damaged in transport and FedEx fully refunded the $15 value as well as the price of packaging and shipping which I had paid for from my own account... I was able to fix it after and it's been working ever since.

After looking at another thread about The Price Is Right, I watched a few episodes on YouTube and I found this:

I can't figure how to embed the video so it starts exactly where I want so just forward to 10m05s if you don't want to watch the whole show!

I had my mom send a picture of our Radarrange, though she didn't get any number plates off. We've had this since before I was born, and it's still working like new. It's funny, she never resets the clock on the microwave or the stove when the power goes out, so that's why the screen is blank.

Amana Radarange RRL-5D from 1984

This is my Amana Radarange RRL-5D. I just had the timer rebuilt last week. I thought I was back on track, but while making popcorn last nite I burned a hole in the inner plastic lining of the door. Does anyone know how I can fix this or find replacement parts. Everything for this microwave sadly seems to be discontinued!
