Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

I have a question my Aunt had a microwave that had a thing it the top that spun around and around.

That thing is called a stirrer. It distributes the microwaves more easily in the cooking cavity of the oven. All the microwaves we have had used those. Usually it's behind a plastic plate of some kind. On our Litton oven the plastic is semi-transparent, when the oven is in operation you can see it moving.

Eric:

There should be a little access hatch on the back that will give you access to the bulb for changing.

It's still a good thing that you took that plastic stirrer cover off; they often are in serious need of cleaning. The cleaner you keep that piece, the longer you'll have it; food debris build-up on it heats up when the unit is used, possibly leading to deformation and pitting.

yep,a little access hatch on the back-take the screw out and it swings open to reveal a 25w double contact bayonet base bulb.this on my '83 RR.Local hardware store had the bulb.

Also after you'll replace your light, look at the stirrer cover while the microwave oven is operating (with the light on) to see if the stirrer moves. You should see a moving shadow through the white plastic.

I don't know if Amana still had this issue with stirrer covers in the early eighties as it did in the late seventies models (the design of the cover was revised and yours looks different from mine). The covers I have in my late-seventies microwave ovens tend to distort over the years and block the air-driven stirrer which causes very uneven cooking.

If this is happening, you can just cut a small part of each blade so it doesn't touch the cover at the back (near the light).

Stirrer Cover removal

FYI...definitely what Sandy said....to clean that upper plastic cover after purchasing a used Amana or existing one...it's not hard..just take a mirror and reflect it up to the cover and you'll see near the front of that cover..some screws. Choose whatever screwdriver will do the job or if it's a hex...go with that tool.

No complaints - everyone has been so helpful here....but I asked about how to remove this here on aw.org, and either didn't see a reply or not sure. Some other brands have no covers...so no worries.
