Hello! Our faithful washer (about16 years old) suddenly won't agitate. It will fill , drain and spin. The motor will spin the other direction for agitate but the belt doesn't move. Stuck transmission? Can these transmissions be taken apart and repaired? Model#ALW880Q

It is a lot of WORK [ and money ] to repair if it needs a transmission and that is not even considering trying to fix the old locked up transmission.

If you want another similar type washer look for a used WP-KM DD washer and fix it instead.

16 years is really impressive for one of those.  How many belts did it chew up?  If it was like the one we had for nine years (ours was a '97), my guess would be three or four of them.

I would junk the machine and go buy some Lotto tickets.

Anything you buy as a replacement, vintage or new, will rinse better than your Amana ever did.

Thanks guys! It's been a great washer, and yes, I've put two belts on it so far😅 I've actually had it apart before to put a new tub seal in, so I know how big a job it is. Is it possible that it's a bearing? Even though it will still spin?. If we buy a new one what would you recommend? I've read the bad news about the new Speed Queens.

Yes, stay away from the new SQ machines (apologies to the grand total of one member here who thinks otherwise).

You can comb through CL and try to find a 2017 or older SQ if you like the long stroke agitation.  Nothing else on the market currently will provide that.  Nothing.

Prepare to be advised that Whirlpool-sourced direct drive is your best option.  I don't care for DD machines due to their short stroke agitation and annoying thumping.

Ok, please disregard the brake question above, I figured that out. And I found the culprit inside the gearbox. The teeth are wiped out on this piece. Of course the question now is, will it be possible to find one?

search online, the tranny unit is available and unless you are against it, I would get one, replace the broken one and have a washer that cleans properly.
