April Fool????

Now Compwhiz, you have got to be pulling our leg..... Right??

Gee,

I'm so gullible. But then, seeing what stuff people stumble on around here, it didn't seem so far out.

I thought so..

I figured it was an April fools joke. When a house is torn down everything in the house gets torn down with it. Most older homes here have a basement. A wrecking company uses a bulldozer and pushes the house into the basement. Then a backhoe dig the pieces of the house(and furnace, water heater, appliances, the basement itself etc.) out of the hole, and loads it into a sanitainer. They would not remove anything from the house, unless a salvage company had purchased the interior doors, art glass, fireplace mantels and woodwork.(if the house was nice enough to have anything worth saving) Those items would have been removed long before the demolition permit was granted by the city.

Lets rethink this.....

This needs to move to the Super section,I know....
I was just thinking... Most old homes that are torn down here were rentals for the last 15 to 50 years of their useful home lives. What happens is the homes are owned by slumlords that milk all the use out of the home and never do anything to them until they are ready to fall down. Many of the homes are quite large, and were high end homes in their day. Some were split into 3 or 4 living units. Some of the people that rent the homes over the years are low income folks. Those are the same people that buy used appliances,as they can't afford new ones. When the appliances "give out" or the people move on,they sometimes just leave the unwanted items behind. The slumlords usually do not clean out the basements. After the houses are finally condemed the slumlord will let the house go back to the city for taxes,or back to the bank. The whole process takes usually takes years before the house is finally salvaged and torn down.
So if the house has been a rental for 50 years, has had many people live there for all those years, who buy appliances when they are already 10 to 20 years old..... And the house has sat vacant for 5 to 20 years, and the basements are never cleaned out..... What classics are in the basements of these condemed houses??
I know the people who own the old house salvage company in Fort Wayne. I have bought some things from them over the years, and they are good people to deal with. I am going to print some photos of some of the things I would like to find, and ask them to keep an eye out for me. If I offer them a finders fee, I am sure they will look for anything I ask for.
Has anyone found anything this way before?

Thanks for the tip Compwhiz

Rick

April Fools!

Hey-we needed a little April Fools merriment anyway. I just hope Robert didn't take the bait and take a quick powder to Washington! My heart did skip a beat when I read that-and then I remembered the date!

Apologies to everyone else, but...

I say "OY" too for a feeble attempt at humor.

Compwiz (or is it Corey or Bobby?), the SpongeBob Forums are waiting...and it's your favorite too, Invision Power Board...

NOT!

Boys, Boys.................

MY Eyes............
You may have to be sent to your room and grounded from the washer.

Austin,this time it is you

Why are you "baiting" this kid,to make him lose his temper? If you are trying to impress anyone you have failed to do so.If you do not like what he posts don't respond to it. Everyone here knows how to read, and can form their onw opinions. Nobody likes a bully. I have spoke with you on the phone and you told me you were a Christian, and your faith was very important to you. So act like a Christian should. Easter Sunday was less than a week ago.
Try to be fair and compassionate to others. It gets much better results than being cruel and unyielding. You will find that out in your life.

Two good ideas,Rick!
Being fair and compassionate towards others, and checking with salvage companies when they tear into old houses.I would think any appliances left in a condemned house aren't going to be much, but you never know where gold lies!
