Go for it...

Oh, Lawrence,

I wish, and you're right, Calera is in my neighborhood.

I've been kind of fantasizing about a white one for the Tuscaloosa house (our primary residence), but my husband won't even move on new used for our kitchen here. Finally, I just told him to do whatever he wants here.

I had planned on going older in the country house kitchen, but that Americana fridge and a streamlined GE stove would look pretty sharp with the Geneva cabinets.

One thing's for sure, the price will have to come down... $800 is a bit out of budget.

So, John LeFever, how easy are these to maintain and keep running?

Space pig...

A white version of the GE in your profile picture would be the perfect companion for this Americana. If you decide to get it, I have some teenage boys for hire to help you load it and a rest stop in Tuscaloosa if you need one. (I'd help for free if I had the sound footing and muscle...)

Sarah, thanks so much for the offer. I agree that the price is a little steep, even for one in working condition. The compressor crapped out on my turquoise Americana, and from what I researched, there's a fair amount of issues with GE compressors from 1964. So, even if I were to get this one, I'm afraid it would crap out sooner than later. The refrigerator section of our kitchen was designed with a big Americana in mind, so I know that it would fit, and it would blend in nicely with our white steel cabinets! Jeannine

Sarah, we still have the turquoise Americana, and from what I've heard from folks here in the group, the compressors can definitely be changed out. However, there's no one around here locally that will do it, so I'll have to ship it off somewhere. Not long after the Americana went out, I did find a smaller vintage GE that we are now using in the kitchen that's fitting the bill for now, but I really miss that countertop on the Americana.

Hi all--- yes I bought the Americana. It was not as pictured. The photos on Facebook were probably three years old. It has been stored in an open shed attached to a barn sort of building

. Very dirty and a good bit of mostly surface rust. The seals are completely black with mold. It does, however, work - so we negotiated a new price and I bought it. I was amazed that my wife- who is not a fan of things that are not pristine - absolutely loves it. I am working on getting it cleaned up so I can bring it inside to be used.
There are some missing pieces I want to replace:
1) one of the shelves in the fresh food section (combo52 mentioned having one...!)
2) The egg storage bin
3) The ice tray and storage bin for the auto-fill ice maker
4) The grille that goes on the outside front bottom section of the unit
5) Is there supposed to be a meat storage bin, drawer, or something in the fresh food section?
I have a few questions too that should probably be posted in the discussion section. Time is short today...will post more Monday - or if I have a chance - over the weekend. Will also post some photos when I have it ready to use (maybe a before photo too)

Thank you so much for posting this pic. I like the door design better on ours- an improvement over the narrow racks in mine- I will see about locating the missing components. Although the fridge was not in the same condition as in the photos in the ad- I am happy with it and anxious to get it cleaned up and in the house. Am working today to remove the surface rust and mold.
