i dont want a built in for a number of reasons, and with regard to portables, i dont really need the typical butcher block top which adds to the height of a unit . starting the measure on the floor, does anyone know if there are any / many PORTABLE dishwashers of any vintage that were less than 35 inches in height ? old one, recent one, weird one, etc...thanks

Is not that huge, there are only a handful of models and they mostly all come from same manufactures.
As stated tops of most if not all portable dishwashers come off easily. Measure the top of what you're interested in and see how much height is lost by removing.
Other than that there aren't many options unless you take off the casters, but then unit wouldn't be portable.
Depending upon your needs look at those counter top dishwashers.
