I came home yesterday to be greeted by a big pile of lumber and a frame. NOW we can see the floorplan.

(2 x 6) on 24 inch centers or is it still (2 x 4) on 16 inch centers?
Theses are structurally equivalent, yet the deeper cavity can handle more ...er ...uhm what's the word..ah insulation.

Looks like they're using standard 2x4s. I think those outer frames are temporary just as a spacer for when it's time to put the bricks. Just a guess but I think that's what they're doing.
I don't know how they are called, but they are 5cm x 10cm. Overhere houses are built in a total different way. It will be interesting to see how this all goes.

Congrats, Jason. I hope the building goes smoothly and quickly. Toggles, you are very brave to ask what you call a metric 2x4!! I can think of a few things, but I'll hold my comments. This is your territory.

Our homes vary by region and climate, too.
Warm southern I THINK tends to be more concrete and less wood-termites and humidity-damage issues.
Here in and around NYC we are beginnig to FINALLY use fire-poof construction=> Brik face (one layer) in front of cinderblock over a poured concrete foundation.
When I was in the southwest last week, or so, there are TONS of pre-manufactured (off-site built) homes that appear to be rolled to their location. [Note: I don't mean trailers]. Perhaps it is too hot to *stick* build (on-site build)there?

Wood frame construction is a North American thing. I think the rest of the world just builds their houses from the ground up with bricks and mortar. Isn't that the case Louis or Mike? I remember years back my uncle visiting from the UK was fascinated by the way we built houses over here. My neighbors new house down the road which is very similar to Jasons folks new house doesn't even have a cement foundation for the basement. Everything is treated wood which I've never seen before but the other new houses going up around still have cement foundations.

This may be because Europe burned most of their wood by the 1400s.
We still have (and abuse) resources because we have only been civlized here for 300+/- years.
And I must add, the prices of our products and goods and commodiites may not reflect the cost to the enviroment or the true social costs.
One day North America will figure out NOTHING is limitless and the huge waste that goes on is a horror-show for the global community.
