Yesterday, David Allen (Turbokinetic) and I gave the combo John L. rebuilt for me a test run. Many thanks to David and John as well as all of you who have followed and encouraged me on this project.

It's marvelous! Amazing! Is there any reason it would not make a good daily driver?

Water usage?

I used a modern front loader once, and I was truly disgusted by how it sloshed my blanket in about 2" of water which turned grey and didn't appear to rinse it nearly enough. Blech.

That might be a fair trade off if I lived in a region of frequent drought, but I'm not in California, I'm in the southeastern US where we have plenty of water.

So, I'm pretty sure that my little vintage combo uses more water than a modern front loader, and I AM TOTALLY FINE WITH THAT.

I am, however, curious about how its water consumption compares to my 1990s Speed Queens.

Dying to see the vid, but if you're still here before I watch it, each GE Combo fill is seven gallons, so with three rinses, that's 28 gallons.

Have lots of fun!

I would hope that you stop it after the final "spins" to spin out the load in something that at least does not leave them to where water drips from them if they are hung up. I would also hope that you either have a well and a way to return the used condenser water to the soil or super cheap water for the condenser water and a way to use the condenser water in an ecological way like using it in a top loader to wash clothes or a way to return it to a yard or garden. When I had an electric water heater, I used to reuse the warm condenser water from my Duomatic to wash clothes in a top loader.

Water

Hi Tom,

We have plentiful well water and a septic system. All water ends up back in the ground on our place. In order to reduce the load on the septic system, we will probably just run field lines from both washers out into the yard.

I'll have to open it up after the spin cycle and check the clothes. We let it run straight through yesterday.

You guys did a GREAT job restoring this cute GE-COMBO. When I seen the YELLOW/GREEN (harvest gold & avocado) color combination, the first thing my mind flashed on was LEMON-LIME, then the name SPRITE.

Is this machine smaller in size compared to the first combos that came out, like the Westinghouse SPACE-MATES? Or am I wrong in thinking that the first combos that came out, like the MAYTAG, were big machines?

It was my pleasure to hook it up and run it at my shop! Fascinating machine for sure. And it didn't seem to take that long... but we were busy with other projects while it was washing.

Stunning machine and I can’t agree more with your sentiment about today’s front loader washers.  You can’t get anything clean in 2 inches of water!  Anyway, happy to see the machine humming away — beautiful!
