Another grocery chain bites the dust

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Another probable casualty of Wal*Mart.

If you want diversity & real competition in the market... don't buy from the big bad big boxes.

Bye Bye WD....

Sadly, 'tis true - Winn Dixie is going down the tubes.
The local stores ( 2 ) have been selling out for the last 3 weeks, and tomorrow is the final day...
I'll miss them

That's sad to hear, when I lived in Florida we shopped at both Winn Dixie and Publix.

When I first moved here from Manhattan I was so enamored with the huge 40 isle big box stores, having not seeing anything like it for many years, so bright and clean and not just one or two brands of detergent, plenty of choices of everything. Here we have quite a few local big box stores such as Rainbow and Cub, but now we prefer the smaller urban stores such as Lunds which is big enough to have good selection and small enough to make their own Chicken Pot Pies. YUM.

You would never catch me in a Wall-Mart, but Target is a wonderful store and unlike Wall-Mart their heart and politics are in the right place. I was so happy with Target at Christmas time that I meant to email them and offer them some free advertising space on our site for laundry and dishwashing products. Another thing still on the to-do list.

Because of Winn-Dixie

It's too bad about Winn-Dixie. I was just reading a story in the business section about them. The article was about the new family movie, "Because of Winn-Dixie". It said that the chain was "struggling with a market meltdown, competition, disastrous earnings and the suspension of its dividend." They were selling the movie merchandise at its stores and were planning to donate copies of the book to libraries.

I grew up with Winn-Dixie (actually Kwik Chek). After the A&P became Lindsley Lumber, it was the closest store to us. We toted many a grocery bag home from there. I can still smell their barbequed chickens.

I too am tiring of Wal-Mart. They used to be convenient and offer a large variety of products. Now I see them as the death-knell for mom and pop variety stores, independent nurseries, and small grocery stores. It's too bad. Commerce in our country is losing so much character. We are on the path to becoming one giant brand.

NOOOOOOOO

Winn Dixie is the best store ever. The people are actually friendly there and everything's organized where you can find stuff.

Sam Walton, You and your Ghetto Mart stores suck. If you weren't dead I'd whoop your @$$.

Tar-shay

Target rocks. Much better, CLEANER, friendlier, and more organised than Ghetto-Mart.

Here we have Sav-A-Center, a grocery store version of Getto-Mart. Think, only 2 cashiers open at any given time, long lines, unfriendly employees, etc.

WD and the local Associated Food Stores might've been more expensive but you got great service. The detergent isle of WD was always to die for with the shelves full of brand name and Arrow branded stuff.

I, too, am a WalMart hater. They moved into Worthington, MN (a town of only about 10,000) because of the large meat-processing plant there. Since then, the Super Valu (called County Market for some reason) went under, as well as some other locally-owned businesses. It's a shame, but it's also very difficult to get people to understand that it's better to spend a few extra dollars and keep local businesses. We Americans do like our rock-bottom prices....

Now I hear WalMart advertising touting how they "care about the welfare of their workers and their communities." BULL**IT!!

What REALLY drives me crazy is the number of people who say "Oh, they sell products made in the USA!" Kids, just because a stamped-on American flag is on the product doesn't mean it's made here.

But don't get me started.....

Lies all lies

"care about the welfare of their workers and their communities."

That should go in the LIES thread. They don't care about people, all they care about is being big, making money and putting other people out of business. And the people that they hire to work there, well, it's better than them being on the street.

WalMart: The BULL people.

Not defending big box stores AT ALL, but companies don't put other companies out of business; customers do (or lack of customers do)! I'm as guilty as anyone. I'll check Wal-Mart's price on an identical item and usually buy it there. I don't think anyone likes paying a higher price unless you get some kind of extra premium with it (i.e. better service from a local). I find it hard to justify paying more for identical dry goods etc. Being self employed, my business depends on "locals".

Very well said, coldspot. It's not Wal-mart that puts other stores/companies out of business, its the consumers. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sticking up for Wal-mart in the least. We have one here in Port St. Lucie and I hate it, It's never stocked, the "associates" are rude and never available to help. However, If people wouldn't shop at Wal-Mart, they wouldn't keep making money and growing. Ultimately, It's up to the consumer to decide what businesses grow and flurish and which ones go under.

Don't blame it all on Wal-Mart

At least in Central & SW Florida, the Winn Dixie stores have been sorely lacking for a looooooooong time; way before Wal-Mart had any influence. So much so, we've not shopped one in years. Actually, what pulled the trigger me is their silly shoppers club you're required to join in order to get a sale price.

I have 2 relatives that recently left Winn Dixie store and regional managment out of disgust after a combined 50 year tenure. They started out as bag-boys and worked their way up the ladder. Both were very distraught due to the fact that they felt they were loyal "lifers" and realized and appreciated all the opportunites that their Winn Dixie careers had afforded them. (their wives would snicker about shopping at Publix) However, things have not been right for quite awhile, they felt powerless to implement changes and I think they realized they just needed to leave on their terms.

During family holiday dinners, weddings and funerals Winn Dixie financials and other minutia was often a topic of conversation and generally not in a favorable light. They've since moved onto Lowes and Wal-Mart and are doing fine. Publix, Albertson & Kash n Karry (soon to be Sweet Bay) are doing o.k. at least in Florida. Publix, the best of the lot.

I have never bought anything at Wal-Mart on my own accord (never will either...). There's just *something* about the stores that I don't like...can't point it out. Maybe it has to do with the negative overall atmosphere of the place...

Target, however, like Robert said, has a great selection of items and is honestly a better store. Mom agrees too (die-hard Target shopper).

Wal-Mart=YUK

Because Of Wal Mart

It feels like my IQ has lowered 20 points automatically when I enter a WalMart. The overall unorganization and unfriendliness of the place just gets annoying after a while.

Well, at least it ain't K Mart.

A few years ago, there was one good thing about Wal-Mart. Her name was Sara but she stopped working there before I had a chance to ask her out :-( . I guess she got disgusted (like any other WM employee) and left.

Wal-Mart has been here for more than 20 years, and built a new 24-hr Super Center last year. Some WM "associates" here have been with the store for a LONG time, so I assume they're happy. The Super Center triggered the other local chain grocery to build a new store as well, which they really needed to do anyway, and had been planning already, but WM speed up the process. The other grocery in town closed, which it really needed to do anyway.

There are a few things about it that irritate me a little, but I don't dislike WM. The store here has a nice range of general grocery, drug/cosmetics/personal care, household goods, etc. The produce and meat departments are a little suspect, but the bakery and deli are usable. Once in a while the selection choice for a specific kind of item is a bit limited, but I can generally make-do with what I find. I do like the 24-hr aspect, it's not unusual to find me there @ 1:30 AM.

Wal-Mart SUCKS!!

I have to agree, I hate Wal-Mart. The very name has become a synonym for low life. Koehls and Target are both nice stores. I shop in both of them.

I miss Winn-Dixie as well.Used to have one in downtown Greenville. It closed a number of years ago.The store sat empty for several years-now its a "Big Lots" store. We have a "Wally World" (what folks here call Wal-Mart)thats a supercenter. Hate the place-only go there to get the Carnation Malt mix for my Vita-Mix drinks. Used to get it at the Winn-Dixie.The Winn-Dixie store was so bright, clean and pleasenmt place to shop. the Wal-Mart is dirty, crowded, and dirty. And the check-out there takes FOREVER!-despite many of the check-out lanes are open-they are just slow!

hmmmmmmm

Well I live about 45 minutes from Wal-mart headquarters in Arkansas. People would be shocked at the headquarters. IT is very low key. The original building. I'll take a pic sometime when I am up there.
They are a benfactor to KIPP: KIPP is a network of free open-enrollment college-preparatory public schools in under-resourced communities throughout the United States. At KIPP, there are no shortcuts: outstanding educators, more time in school, a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, and a strong culture of achievement and support help our students make significant academic gains and continue to excel in high school and college.
I think that a lot of people may just be a bit Jealous of the success of Wal-mart. The family is really a nice group of folks. AND SAM, Well I dont think you could have found a more down to earth man. He drove a old pick-up for years. And once when he was asked why he didn't buy a new one. He was quoted as saying: Why, this one is fine. Our Wal-marts here are very clean. I think that Wal-Mart has good marketing strategies. Take for instance not having the cost of printing advertising circulars. Bring in the competitors ad, We will match it.
I dont know, I just dont get all the Wal Mart bashing that goes on. Its a place to buy things, They have reasonable prices. The workers aren't leaving, So there must be something good for them there. The customers aren't leaving. And Wal Mart is still building more stores. So they are getting something right.
I found some pictures of Animals (zebra, tiger, elephant, giraffe) 27 x 16. These were 20 bucks each. At Kohls the same exact pictures 12 x 6 were 49 bucks each.
Funny this comes up. Two nights ago in a chatroom, some people started Wal-mart bashing and there were several people who worked at wal mart and spoke up about how well they were treated as employees.
I really think Wal-Mart is getting bad press, Because that is what the press likes to do. Everyone loves an underdog, and Wal Mart is the big bad bully. I'll continue to shop there as long as I get good prices. **climbs down off soap box**

Wal-Mart does do a LOT of prime time Network TV adveretising-they buy lots of time on the networks.Their little smiley "charactor" is very well known. What they save by not printing ciculars is used for the TV advertising.I wish the WM owners would tour some of their stores-maybe they would have them cleaned up.There is a store in virginia I went into ONCE and never returned-its was VERY dirty-rude employees, mechandise cluttering the asiles-creating a fire-safety hazard.I thought another company now owns Wal-Mart.I thought "Sam" sold it to someone else. The Sams club stores are very clean and nice though.Like some other members here-I cheered when Target moved into town-VERY nice, clean and well organized store. And even HELPFUL employees.

winn dixie

I will truly miss WD.I have been a faithfull customer since I moved here to Florida.I take advantage of their biweekly buy one get one free and bimonthly buy one get two free specials. They were the first store here I shopped and found my favorite coffee beans(8 0'Clock and Bokar)and many other fine products no one else carries including ghetto mart.I hate that place. The first thing I would see when I entered there would be the missing childrens photos.I used the mens room there once and what I saw going on there reminded me of the missing and abducted childrens photos in the entrance. No wonder they have it posted, most of them must be abducted from their stores.

I'm sorry, but I must put my 2 cents in!

Wal-Mart does and always put Mom and Pops stores out of business because, they can buy in bulk and can pass the savings to the customers.

In retail, most distributors will have a minimum for the store owners to buy per-se 200 pieces or more when in fact mom and pops may only afford to buy 50 pieces of the same item and if they don't buy the minimum that the distributors sells, they may not sell to them. And if they(M&P's) do buy the minimum, they may not be able to sell all the pieces and in reality, they are over stocked with worthless goods if they don't sell all of it. So in reality, distributors will cater to those who can buy the most and bring them a higher profit, while at the same time contributing to put the strong noose around the neck mom and pops because they can not sell the same amount of goods matching the low prices of the big bad super stores causing them to go into bankruptcy and shut their doors!

Remember, the food chain is getting smaller and then they start to eating their young....

customer service

Actual experiences
ME: "Excuse me, where I can I find the detergent?"
WD employee: The detergent is on isle 10.
Me: Thank you

ME: "Excuse me, where I can I find the detergent?"
WM employee looks the other way
Me: Excuse me!
WM emp: What?
Me: Where can I find the detergent
WM emp looks annoyed and then goes "It's over there" and points vaguely to the location and then walks away.

Checking out:
WD cashier: "How are you today?", checks out groceries, "That will be $10.52", money exchange, "Thank you" and I leave.

WM cashier looks at me funny, slowly checks the items, pushes the total key on the register and WAITS for me to hand over the money. Then stares at me like she's pissed because I didn't just look at the screen for the total.

From what I can hear, WalMart cashiers and employees are worked hard. Long hours, minimal pay. If there's no one in a certain cashier's line, the cashier gets in trouble for not bringing in a customer.

Correction on Sam Walton, after he died, the company changed execs and that's when it went to crap.

At least it's not a Shell station where the girl behind the counter is talking on her CELL PHONE "yeah, uh huh, yeah, i heard what she said, yeah girl...." and then imagine the same treatment from the Walmart cashier.

Chapter 11 vs Chapter 7

When I saw the original announcement, it didn't say which kind of bankruptcy it was, I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions that it was the liquidation kind of bankruptcy. But it wouldn't be the first time that a company re-organizes, comes out of bankruptcy, but ends up going back into bankruptcy and getting liquidated the second time around, witness Montgomery Ward.

Winn-Dixie is still with us

Right. Chap. 11 means their reorganising, not going all the way out of business.

So all is not lost.

Fortunately the WD by me isn't anywhere a near a Ghetto Mart so I don't think they're in much danger.

WM Experience

Interesting. I've been asked "Can I help you find something?" numerous times by WM employees who are doing stocking when I've been there in the wee-morning hours. The cashiers are generally pleasant, ask "How are you this morning?" or say "Have a good morning, sir."

I did chew out a girlie once when irritation built up because the cashiers always grab my stuff and start scanning before I can get up to the register display, which is always turned *away* from the customer approach. She was quite shocked.

Me: "Every time I come here you people grab my stuff and start scanning it before I can get up to the register to follow on the display!"

Casher, doing shocked pearl-clutch: "I always do that???"

You mean, they talked to you?

Whoa. Where is this WM? The Twilight Zone? I've yet to see one like that. Of course, this is New Orleans we're talking about.

We lost our W-D on the west end of town a few years ago when the K-Mart was expanded into it's space. One of my friends worked as a meat cutter there for years. He liked the place a lot, and they had good benefits. He also got to know many of the regular customers that came in the store. Not just because I had a friend working there, but I can say that the W-D here really had nice cuts of meat. That was the place to go before a cookout for a good steak or other tasty meat...W-D's slogan "We're the Beef People" was the truth!

I agree with you all totally with the Wal-Mart syndrome that's invaded many towns. My neighbor bought all sorts of stuff from the hardware department to fix up his new home...paint, ceiling fans, etc. Well, he got the low price he paid for, and the quality to go along with it! The paint is peeling off the house just 3 years after he put it on. All the ceiling fans and other small appliances broke. The rugs that he's put down are all dingy and are threadbare...The place looks like a wreck, and I feel really bad for him putting all the effort he did into fixing the place up to have everything malfunction and mess up!

Now, if you go to a Wal-Mart here in Richmond VA, expect it to be an all night affair. I walked around the store on a wild goose chase the other night trying to find some simple green. Every employee I talked to either couldn't speak english, or would send me to an incorrect location. Checkout is terrible, and takes a minimum of 30 minutes, and you face clerks with the worst attitudes at the regesters. I never see the same people there working there more than once, so their turnover must be extremely high!

I've basically stopped going there, A trip to Wal-Mart is a bad experience I choose not to deal with!!!

Wal-Mart really went down the crapper when Sam Walton died and the company went public. Instead of being a nice friendly place, they were changed by money hungry stock brokers looking to make a quick buck off of keeping stock prices good.
