Another Kenmore acquisition (free 85 lady up for grabs)

Hello all,

I was doing my standard appliance pickup at my local recycler and saw these beauties. They have the cool cover over the control panels and the washer works great! Just a little squeky at the start of spin (bearings or spin tube?)

My wife says I can only have a certain number of "classics" so my 85 lady kenmore is up for grabs. Works great. How do I clean all the gross stuff off the lid and crusty detergent by the snubber?

removing gross stuff from the paint

The paint on both the washer and dryer is gross, is there a cleaner i can use to get them shiny again? I tried TR-3 and it didn't do much...

Cleaning Recommendations

To clean that gunk off the vinyl parts, I would put a small amount of Bon Ami (Comet & others should NOT be used) on a very wet paper towel and scrub away. I had a lot of scum and hard water deposits on my Whirlpool and I used this method to clean the vinyl rub tub surround and the agitator. Came out just like new, shine and all!
To clean the paint, I would use a cleaner type auto wax to get the "ground in" dirt out.
However on the bottom of the tub I have some lime deposits that I even tried Lime Away on and could not remove. When we first got this machine the tub was very shiny, over time (12 Years) it has become dull. Is this normal?

Toothbrush switch bypass

Love your lid-switch bypass. Genius, so simple, so inexpensive. so elegant, and insulative!

I have also tried a large white plastic molly-plug (which sits in the switch permanently), then I break the plunger off the lid.

Gas service

I find it fascinating that builders install an outlet for an electric dryer, when gas service is three feet (just less than a meter) or less away from the dryer's location.

IMHO- the use of gas is less expensive in most parts of the country and generally (unless there is hydro-electric power) a bit easier on the environment...

70's Lady K

Wow, that looks VERY close to my Lady K, with a few minor differenes. She shouldn't be too hard to clean up and looking like show-room new again.
What is your Model number? I can't tell if she is a 71, or 72.
The Vari-Flex agitator gives GREAT turnover! You'll have fun with this set, for sure, I know I sure do with mine!!

Steve, offering both electric & gas hookups for a dryer in a house that has gas provides flexibility for the homeowner. Some people simply prefer electric clothes dryers to gas period. And with our mobile society, electric dryers are more flexible in a situation. My sister is an example. She could have gotten a gas dryer when she moved to her new house a few years back, but opted for electric just in case she ended up moving where there wouldn't be gas--which she is now in the process of moving.

"Wigwag's" White Lady K is a 1972 model (the "next" to the last year of the Lady with a 3 Speed Motor and Vari-Flex Agitator (1973 was the last year of this machine I do believe)). That year (1972), they have done away with the curved metal handles on the washer lid and dryer door (1969-71), and went with the notch handle on the washer lid and a plastic handle on the dryer door.

wigwag's '72 Lady K

I thought his was a '72 model, like mine is. His has a few differences, like: Metal tub ring(Mine is plastic) Vari-flex Agitator is Orange colored(mine is white with the upper extended fin's), his machine is white, mine is "Tawny Gold", and his drier is Gas, ( mine is electric)
Hope he gets his up and running and looking like show-room new, He'll love it!

This is true. I imagine, though, for collectors like us, gas, if available, would be the way to go. Depending on the size of the motor and whether or not they have electronic ignition, 3-4 gas dryers could run on 1 120 volt circuit. And it would be intersting to see how may dryers the typical 1/2 inch gas line in most houses could supply. And if necessary, it would be much easier to run 1 larger gas line to supply several gas dryers than to run several individual circuits to supply a number of electric dryers. And it probably could be done with the existing gas service, whereas it would almost be a certainty that a larger electric panel would have to be installed.
