Got this 57 Economy Duomatic a few weeks ago.As I took it apart,I noticed parts that should have shown wear, did'nt.This machine had a short life,as it had been over suds who knows how many times.I guess the controls got wet one to too many times as this would cause it to short out.I guess they tried to repair it or just got tired of it being over suds and shoved it in a corner.Who knows.I knew the true test was to here the transmission. My guess was right. The machine sounds just like the 57 gas Duomatic that I got a few years ago. That machine was never used. The transmission sounds great! High spin is smooth and quiet!I think Jon Charles and I have the only working Economy Duomatics known. All I need now is the 58 Economy Duomatic and I will have all 6 styles of the 36" Duomatic that were made.

Nothing like . . .

. . . a Duomatic. You've got some great looking machines there. Congratulations on your find.

I love using mine. It's a 1959 Philco/Bendix Duomatic. Works like a charm.

57 DuoMatic

WOW John you always manage to do such stunning restorations and it is so cool that it turned out to be a low mileage machine, I can't wait to see it in person.

It is amazing when you think about some of the appliances we and other AW members have found in recent years that are in spite of being over 50 years old are often in almost new condition in many ways. Most of these machines would not have lasted even 20 years if they had actually seen normal use.

The 1965 Copper-Tone GE Americana refrigerator that I had shipped from Missouri last month arrived here looking like it had just been completely waxed outside and had absolutely no trace inside that food had EVER been stored inside.

beautiful!! amazing! bought a new washer recently and they quoted the average lifespan of todays machines being 8 years!! Gotta love the vintage ones that were made to actually last.

John E,

Another amazing restoration! No signs of oversuding anymore. The view underneath is like new, although I doubt they had worm drive SS hose clamps back then ;) Its sure cool to see the sheen on the parts as they originally were! Let me know if you ever need some plating or bead blasting done.

Sometime I need to drop by and see your fine collection, I haven't had the pleasure yet!

Difference of Duomatics

Economy models had no magic water heater. Also they had hot and warm wash only. The higher priced models had more wash and rinse options and a magic water heater.Magic water heaters were not in any of the gas models. They were a well built machine.A real work horse!I love all the 36"models they made.I am not sure but I think the 58 economy also has the hot and warm settings for wash also.Jon Charles would know as he has one.It too is a BEAUTY!!!!
