I love anything vintage small appliance including fans though I don't have any to speak of I'm still hoping my mom hasn't thrown out her old Kenmore 50's table fan down in her basement. What make is the 2nd picture of?.I'm really only familiar with names like Kenmore & SeaBreaze for old fans.
I picked up that little blue Superior fan a few weeks ago. not that old probably 70's and I have a 60's Braun squirrel cage mini desktop
 
I have an old Emerson oscillating desk-table fan.Its pretty effective.And it can still oscillate.It doesn't have the original cord.Like both of the examples shown-the second one reminds me of "barrel fans-blowers" sold by Grainger and McMaster-Carr today.The KN fan is really COOL.Bet it has a high quality motor-thats a good reason it has survived!!
 
Speaking of fans, last year when I was driving home from back east I picked up a couple of big box fans with remotes at Menards, made in China naturally but laughingly on the cartons it says.. Lasko salutes its US employees.. I wonder how many there are..two? They're all plastic like everything now but surprisingly hi powered

Pete K. the 2nd Fan, if you look real close to the Handle is a Westinghouse Model. It isn't real clear, but I've had a Friend of mine teach me some time ago, how to basically figure out not just Brands of items, that you might not be able to see the name very clear. Also this works for Street/ Freeway/ Highway Sign's. Purely by knowing the length of the Name, as with that Fan, the Name is following the curve of the Handle, knowing that Westinghouse is quite a long length word, besides being able to see some of the letters, that is how I figured out what the Brand was.

I saw a really neat Sears box fan from the '70s at the Goodwill. It had two knobs, one for fan speed and one for "cool" control. I don't know how this would've worked. Unfortunately it was out of my price range.
 
Cool Control

Upscale fans would often come with a thermostat that one could set so that as it got cooler in the evening, the fan would automatically shut off.

you might be able to see the controls here better and on a cool, dry night, yes the thermostat does work well as the room gets cool to the setting the fan does shut off ...........

I need to "redo" the lettering so that the word Westinghouse shows up nicely. That thing "hauls" air big time and is not to loud. Both fans have had extensive cleaning, polishing and oiling of motors. The fan blades on the Westy are actually made of leather or vinyl believe it or not. They are not metal or plastic. The Kenmore they are metal.
 
I believe that basic Westy design was used on the MobileAire models (that had wheels for easily moving from room-to-room).
 
Love the Kenmore fan greg. Heres a pic of my "twins". The one on the left was my Grandmothers. I remember laying in front of it as a kid in the 60's and singing into it. She gave it to me when I bought my first house in 1986. The one of the right I stumbled accross, literally, in the attic of a friends house they bought last year. It was being used to exhaust air from the attic. I use both of these as well as a few other classics all summer long. They don't make em like this anymore!

i've got an old Emerson tabletop fan that moves generous amounts of air. It's a really cool art-deco type. Not a box fan, but a table fan probably from the 30's or 40's.

Any of your all got a Restoration Hardware around your parts? They have these nice little shiny stainless-steel pedistal fans in 3 different sizes: 6 inch, 10 inch & 15 inch. They are rather pricey, at about $100, but they are built like the old ones with lots of metal, and they are very quiet too. You'd think you were looking at an antique, but it's actualy a new fan! The nice thing about them is that they are made in the USA...yes! I dunno how many people they will appeal to, considering they are almost 5 times the amount of a wal-mart special, but for me, I think I'm gonna buy one. It's neat to know I own an appliance I could pass down to my grandkids!
 
I've seen those all metal fans selling here, desktops and pedestals but not near that expensive. I didn't check where they were made I just assumed Asia but I'll take another look next time I'm out and about. Are you sure they're made in the USA and not just a US importer like Lasko fans who deck their cartons with stylized US flags for fans made in PRC (china)
 
Greg, You know I love fans! Kenny, here`s one likr yours that I polished about 6mo ago. Needs it again. It was reaslly rough and locked up but it runs prety good now.
 
And heres my favorite GE. I use it all the time I`m on my computer. Moves a lot of air and very quiet!
 
And my others. These were all ready for the trash when I found them. If I could save some or all of the original paint I did and repainted the rest. They all run but a couple could use bearings.The gold curtain rod is there to keep the curtian out of the fan blades.
 
Vintage fans

I have a couple of them too,but Don you have quite a collection going on there! Very nice they all look mint! I love your marble top dresser/table and decor too. BTW Did you ever run all those fans at once?

Here are my two fans. The green one is a Westinghouse from the 1920's.I got it years ago. The black one is a General Electric from the 1930's.It has been around this house since I can remember. The GE ran in the GE factory for almost 20 years straight!All three shifts. A friend of my grandpas worked out there,and when they updated the fans in the GE shop,brought it home and gave it to gramps. It is a WORKHORSE! I use it every Summer on the first floor.I love the sound of it,as it has a certain whine that reminds me of the 1950's and 1960's here when I was a kid.(it was in use in this house all Summer even then) The tan monster behind the fans is my 1941 Lennox furnace.

Vintage fans are KEWL in more ways than one! (:
 
Kenmore Twins

Odd how they look identical, except that one has a baffle around the blades and theother one doesn't. Baffles add to the efficiency by preventing air from going behind the edge of the blades to be recirculated over and over again rather than being pushed out of the housing.
 
Austin, the brass blade is an emerson and runs great. the aluminun blade is a GE and has a nice hum that can put you to sleep, looks like the same age as Rick`s smaller one. Rick, love that green one. Hardly ever see colors on those.Yes I do occasonally run all of them at once! Lots of fun!
