Hi, I need to buy a new top freezer 18 cubic ft refrigerator (I believe that is what they called-it is 65 inches in height and 30 inches in width). I plan to purchase a squaretrade protection with it too. I was wondering if any of you can recommend me a brand (or specific model would be even better) that I can look into. I am thinking about getting a kenmore 60412

Because it is the cheapest I can find and I think I may be ok with the squaretrade protection in case it breaks, though reading the reviews really scared me. I just don't want to move my food out once every couple of weeks. I just want to avoid headaches for as long as I could. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I've owned 2 different GE top freezer refrigerators in the last 12 years. They have both been great performers. The only reason we replaced the first one is because it was an 18 cu ft model and we wanted the smaller 15.5 cu ft instead. I would buy another GE fridge in a heart beat. That's my $.02 worth.

Best 18 CF Top Freezer Refrigerator

The Sears model you are looking at is built by Frigidaire, these are ok, but a Whirlpool or Maytag or GE is a little better.

In any event, if you are worried about cost DO NOT buy any service plans, the refrigerator comes with a one year warranty, it is very unlikely that you will have any problem with this ref for at least a decade.

If you are worried about service problems buy the better ref in the first place.

I agree about GE.  If you go with the Kenmore take a look at what is available at K mart.  They seem to have the basic$. Perfectly good inexpensive fridge for anyone. And it won't be a heartbreaker at replacement time.

thanks for all of your replies. I am looking at this whirlpool here because it is the soonest one that I can get (the GE around me takes at least a week to arrive and I need a refrigerator soon). It is a whirlpool WRT519SZDW. What do you think about this one? With this one do you think a 5 year protection is needed? Many thanks!

Whirlpool

we've bought 2 20 cu ft top freezer Whirlpools, one a year ago and one 6 yrs ago, both US built, both about $500-600. Very pleased so far, absolutely no problems or complaints with either of them, of course not built as well as ones from 40-50 yrs ago but a heck of a lot more efficient!
