Well, I've been thinking about a New Daily Driver.

 

How do we feel about Kenmore (LG) these days ?  I've been reading some not so good to horrible reports on Maytag, Whirlpool and Fridgidaire.

 

I've never owned a Front Loader and I actually dislike them, but I've been pressing my luck with the Septic. So Guys and Gals... Let's Have It !  I was reading a thread and I'm not happy with what I read about the New Top loaders using a teaspoon of water for the rinse no matter what the load size is.

 

Now, I would love to spend the money on a Miele, and I might... but what are the opinions on a roughly $800.00 machines ? I look at it this way... Should I decide to go over the $1,000 mark , why not get the Miele ?

 

I went to the Miele site and it's hard to find prices without going to the dealer. Does anyone know or have purchased a Miele recently and should I have a defribillator on stand by ?  Thanks

 
Hi we bought a Miele washer and dryer about two years ago, and to this day cant fault it at all.

The way the machine handles unbalanced loads are realy incredible, we had a Samsung fl, but it always had problems in trying to balance the loads, and when it eventually started spinning it walked down the passage way.

So eventually we got so fed up with all its issues , I saved for a few months and bought a Miele 7,2 kg. If I convert our South African rand to dollar it would have cost in the region of 1500 -1600$.

It was expensive to us but you really get an awesome machine.

You will spend a small fortune if you go with Miele. They make absolutely amazing machines, but they have a locked down service channel, so you can only get them serviced through their authorized service depots.

If $800 is your budget, but you want the most reliable machine on the market, the only option is a Speed Queen top loader. They make a variety of models, $800 is around what their Top of the line top loader sells for. Their Bottom of the line is around $650.

If you want to keep your water usage low, then a front loader is your only option, but IMHO, I would save your pennies and save up for Speed Queen's front loader. It costs considerably more than other front loaders on the market, (Except for Miele. Miele is more expensive!) but for a good reason. They're built with commercial grade parts and are designed for very heavy duty use. They'll even outlast a Miele! Since they're American, parts would be easy to get. You only live about 1200 miles away from the factory. :) (It's in Ripon, WI.)
 
I just thought I should mention, I own a Huebsch ZFN50R (The Canadian equivalent of a Speed Queen AFN50R) and I'm very happy with it. It actually uses a lot of water to wash the clothes as opposed to other front loaders. (75 liters a load without an extra rinse, according to the water meter. In comparison, our GE top loader used 180 liters of water per cycle.)

There are a few caveats though. I found mine to get a bit noisy on spin, especially if it's working with a load which is a bit unbalanced. It won't spend a lot of time doing distribution, so it'll do the best it can with what it has. It'll limit to a 650 RPM spin if it's a bit unbalanced, otherwise it'll ramp up to 1000 RPM. Other front loaders spin faster, but at a risk to their longevity.

The other thing, we use ours on a concrete floor. If you use it on a wooden floor, especially on a second floor, it will shake the whole house when it goes into spin. (Their top loaders don't have this issue because they have an automatic balancing mechanism which prevents their machines from walking around.)

It's unfortunate that they don't offer some kind of anti-vibration technology, like LG and Samsung do.

One other thing I should mention.. This machine is FAST. It does a load of clothing in about 40 minutes without an extra rinse. 45 minutes with one. In comparison, our friends LG front loader takes about an hour and a half. Our old GE top loader did a load in about half an hour.
 
Eddie not sure of the brand but they had them for $499  around here at Christmas.  F/L's are slowly coming down in price. alr
 
Just got in from...

Looking at 2 models. That's all they had on the floor and for Cape Cod that was a shock.

 

I looked at the W 3033 and the W 4802.  For the small difference in the price, (and when to me when you start approaching $1200.00, what's another 3-400. (It's like throwing a Deck Chair off the Queen Mary) Especially when it's going on a Credit Card.

 

The W 4802 as well as the smaller machine I looked at is Built like a Tank. I would venture to say that if the US was building Front Load Machines back in the 50's and 60's... This would be how we would have built them.  They look like they could have been a division of Daimler/Benz.  Even closing the door felt good. I had asked them also about Speed Queen as they used to be a distributor on Cape and the woman told me that more people were buying Miele than SQ so they dropped them.

 

After leaving the Miele dealer, I scooted over to Sears and looked at their offerings. Ummmmm well, not so much. If your going to shell out $1500+ for a LG, Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung, or Fridgidaire... for $250 more you can get the Large Series Miele.    I guess at this point it's a matter of preference.

 

Ah Ha !!! you're thinking "What about Service ?"  This dealership is Authorized trained Miele Service. Another Earth Shattering Shocking Discovery on Cape Cod.
 
IN SOUTH AFRICA MIELE IN OUR CURRENCY IS OUTPRICED 10X MORE THAN THE TOL SAMSUNG/LGS/SIEMENS/BOSCH.

LETS JUST SAY THAT IN SOUTH AFRICA WE KNOW BY PRICING THAT MIELE IS GOING TO BREAK OUR HOUSEHOLD BUDGET IF WE DO NOT SAVE WAY IN ADVANCE.

THAT IS WHY I BOUGHT 2X USED MIELES THE W820 AND W925/W9245 MACHINES AND HAD THEM FIXED UP AND RUNNING IN MY LAUNDRY.LOL.TO MY DISMAY MY AEG LAVAMATS THAT I OWN(BOUGHT BRAND NEW) IS STILL GOING STRONG AFTER I HAD A FALSE ALARM ABOUT BOTH THEIR BEARINGS/SHOCKS/SUSPENSION LAST TIME ON THE FORUM.

TURNS OUT THAT THEY ARE FUNCTIONING FINE IN MY CONCRETE(UN-TILED) GARAGE.LOL.

ANY INPUT ON THIS SCENARIO WASHER FOLKS??WELL IF I WANT TO GET BRAND NEW MIELE'S IM GONNA HAVE TO SAVE FOR JUST ANOTHER YEAR IN SOUTH AFRICA......
 
If You Want To Dip Your Toes Into the Miele Pool

There is a nice Miele w1918 in your area (Longmeadow Craigslist) that has been sitting for ages. Price is dirt cheap ($200 IIRC), and would make a nice "starter" washer for your intro into front loaders. You'll need a 220v outlet however.

Capacity wise such units are rated for about 11lbs, which is more than enough for most normal purposes. But if your the sort that likes to allow laundry to build up for days or weeks on end and thus have mountains of the stuff to do and want it gone quickly then such a Miele isn't for you. Well not unless you have access to another washer with either a larger capacity and or faster cycles.

has to be the only machine worth spending that amount of money on.! As for a lack of service personnel could it have anything to do with them not being needed???
The things are built like tanks and once levelled on a solid floor they take some beating for quietness and ability to spin with anything unbalanced. Mine is on now and its in the kitchen where I am sat the loudest noise is when a zipper hits the glass... Brilliant machine imho of course...:)

The Miele W4842 was second on my list of contenders actually.

It's called the IntelliQ 200 up here in Canada now though.

I was looking at a washer/dryer pair which were 1 year old demo models.

I almost bought them, but didn't have $4000 lying around. (The price they wanted on the dryer was nearly as much as the washer!)

By going Huebsch, I saved nearly $1400 over going with Miele and I think I got higher quality machines for less money.

Of course, I will admit that the Miele's do have a higher spin speed and more cycle selections.

The Miele W3033 was also an option, but it was priced about $400 cheaper than the W4842. I personally didn't like the tub capacity though. I probably would have gone with an Asko W6903 over a Miele though, but they were just as expensive.

But it's not my call to have a 220 line put in for a washer.

 

I'm already pushing my luck with 5 Washers, 4 Dryers, and 9 Dishwashers !!!  LOL

 

The Model I'm looking at has a 1,000 watt element for "BoilWash". At 115 Volts.
