I have some paneling in my house. My wife painted it,it looks good but still....I hear there is some wallpaper heavy enough to use over paneling. It is said to have a stucco-like texture which I think would look good. Can anyone help?

Hi Tom,
I am far from an expert at wallpaper. However, I bought some at Lowe's that is a very heavy almost spongey vinyl. It resembles wainescoating(sp?). It's paintable, washable and very very easy to work with. I put it in my bathroom halfway up and put a printed paper above it because I didn't want to mess with the real paneling. You really can't tell it from the real thing until you touch it. They had different patterns there when I bought this. Not sure about stucco.
Hope this helps

Thanks Bill and Toggle-Toggle,what you used is just what was described to me.Any special hints to keep the "stripes"from showing thru?

Also Toggle-where did you buy the wallpaper?

~Any special hints to keep the "stripes"from showing thru?

Try to find a pattern that "incorporates" that look of a vertical line within the paper itself. Then the seam becomes less visible. And I guess put the ends of the paper real close, one to the other.

I'm sorry, but I don't recall where gotten. It was ages ago. Probably any decent home-improvement center or paint store.

Solution for Stripes

I am not a wallpaper expert, but what I have found that helps to hid the "Stripes" is to spackle the stripes so the wall is smooth. I have done this on a wall that was paneled and then I papered the wall and it came out perfect. But if you use a paper that is heavy enough it will most likely hide the "Stripes". If you are worried about the stripes showing, and you don't want to spackle, the only other choice is to use a backing paper and put that up first, and then you put up the wallpaper. This backing paper hides all impurities in the wall and leaves a smooth finish. You can usually find this paper at any paint/wallpaper store. Good Luck with your wallpapering job.

My brother showed me a liner, that's what it was called, that could be pasted to the wall before applying wallpaper that was so effective it could be used between a concrete block wall and a wall covering and give a completely smooth surface.

I have used such a liner first myself. I believe you have to hang it with a clay based adhesive. If you use the embosed type of paper, you must use a clay based adhesive too. When you hang that, don't push too hard on the pattern. If the paper looks blotchy, don't worry, that is ok and will disapper when it is dried. Paint it with laxtex paint afterward and it looks great.
I have anagilapta in my dining room from 1897 and is still in good shape. Gary

They also have a wallpaper liner paper thats heavy enough to smooth over cracked plaster walls.
