Anyone collecting Minidisc players/recorders

Yeah another do you collect this or that thread, My collection exists of a MZR-R55, 8 minidiscs, 1 a very rare 80min disc, PC to MD-recoder cable, And yes, Im a Bomfunk MC's fan.

The 80 mins are not particularly rare. I have plenty of them. I'm not so much a collector as a very recent practical user. I got a new car last fall that has Bose audio, so I can't put my old MD player in it, but that was my primary MD use until then. I have a Pioneer Elite component recorder on my main stereo, a Sony S1 portable recorder with NetMD to make transfers and the currently removed Sanyo Exceido car stereo. Probably about 45 discs as well as I used it in two different cars for over 10 years. In my experience, going back to my first Sharp 702 was that MiniDiscs sounded fantastic and it was a very practical system for the car. The car stereo was a $75 closeout and worth every penny. They generally sounded much better than MP3, but convenience wins out over superior technology every time (see Beta).

MP3 is compressed

Thats why PCM audio on the MD-player sounds better.

MiniDisc audio (ATRAC) is compressed as well, just not as much as most MP3s. I've never been able to notice compression artifacts on ATRAC so long as I wasn't using LP4, which the car player didn't support anyway. Perhaps there's someone out there who could tell the difference, and maybe I could with some good headphones and the right material, but MiniDisc served me very well. I bought it less than a year before CD burners started becoming common, and I probably would've bought that instead had it been available cheaply. MiniDisc still makes a lot of sense for car use and for live recording.

I have a Sony MiniDisc player, which I really love. It's probably about 10-12 years old. I don't have any pre-recorded mini discs. I buy blank discs and record music onto them.

It's too bad the format never really caught on in the US. I prefer the MD format to CDs, as they're so easy to re-record and edit. You can also type in the titles and artists.

It's a device that somehow passed me by. I never recall seeing anyone using them however last year in my thrift store rounds I found a Sony mini-disc player at Value Village for a couple of bucks so I brought it home thinking it might be a future collectible. LOL so there it sits

UPDATE

Got 2 new battery's for 6 Euro, Frakk'ing stall, 1 new original battery costs 40 euro, Thats a lot for an 13 year old thing.
