just picked up this little mixer on e bay for $18.50!

been wanting a good mixer for awhile, a kitchenaid especially. so why not "vintage" like everything else!?!

anyway, seller says it runs great but no bowl. said a standard stainless mixer bowl didn't work, beater scraped bottom. anyone know what type of bowl i will have to use?

seller also said he could not get the beater off (no joke intended). anyone know how this beater comes off?

any info anyone has, send it my way please. this mixer is in rochester which is a coincidence cause that g.e. mobile maid dishwasher i bought for a buck is also in rochester! plannin on a quick road trip later this month to get em both.

thanks

I'm going to guess it's a model 4C or something. Others here will know for sure. The beater should come right off. The pic shows the pin that holds it. If there's a spring, push up and then turn clockwise.

That Model:

Uses a glass bowl which is probably NLA from KitchenAid; you'll likely have to haunt eBay for a while to find one. The beater is supposed to come off by pushing it upward and then twisting; if it does not come off this way, some corrosion may be locking the beater to the shaft. Some penetrating oil (like WD-40 or PB Blaster) and a little patience should put things right. Use the penetrant, allow to sit overnight, then try to loosen the beater.

it is a 4C

the seller did say that. i know nothing about mixer history but i do know how great hobart kitchenaid is. if i'm gonna pick up an old vintage mixer i would think kitchenaid would be the best!

thanks for the info on the bowl and beater. i will keep an eye out for a glass bowl.

Looks like a 4c

to me.
The Kitchenaid forum is very useful for all sorts of questions and tracking down manuals, etc. I've put in the link to the forum pages, but there are threads specifically on the 3/4 models.

They've been great to me through the years. Some members are very versed in these great mixers, others are less so. All are enthusiastic and they do have manuals for 3 and 4 through the last 4c from 1971 (I think it was 1971, could be off by a year or two).

Here's a link to a site which restores. I don't know them personally, having had the great good luck to find Model 3x in nearly new condition, so can't vouch for them. Still, lots of fun pix and interesting info. Here's a small gallery on the 4c and you can navigate from there to the entire site:

KitchenAid did, in fact also make stainless steel bowls for this model. Unless you are desperate to get it up and running right now, I would suggest you spend a few months hitting the junk sales, thrift stores, Craigslist, etc. before you turn to E-Bay. These mixers last forever and there are many bowls to be found at lower prices (and nothing hurts as much as bidding on a glass bowl which comes in shards).

There are a few electrical problems, I don't want to sound hysterical, but some people, in some case, under some circumstances, with some few 4c have gotten shocked because the capacitor had failed and a fairly high current 120V was leaking through to the frame. I would suggest caution until you know yours doesn't have that problem. The 3x definitely are affected, just some 4c.

Great mixers - obviously not built for the heavy duty stuff of their bigger sisters, but for my money, the quality of Dormeyer and the power of Sunbeam MM (the real Sunbeam, not this current trash).

Lucky you!

Attachments

Can anyone advise if the front hub on the 4C model will accept the same attachments (like graters, etc) used with the later models such as K45, etc?

Thanks, Ralph

All Kitchenaid accessories are compatible with all Kitchenaid models, as the attachment hub never changed.

I have a Kitchenaid 3B in mint condition I got for $5 at a flea market this summer, complete with glass bowl. It is a nice mixer, though for most tasks I prefer using my Mixmaser 12C

Thanks Sam. I kind of thought the hubs were the same for the earlier models but needed someone to confirm it.

And...

A friend of mine that collects Iron Frying Pans called me and said "I have 3 of those. I'll give one to you". So here it is.

I will ask him if he has any Bowls or a Complete one for you. Eddie on the Cape

thanks

i knew you guys would have a wealth of information out there on this little mixer.

i caught it on e bay in the last 13 seconds of the auction just by accident so i threw out a bid and got it for 18.50 so even if it has problems i can't complain.

thanks for the info and possible leads and offers on a bowl, there is no rush on my part. the few times i will use it here i will use some bowl in the meantime.

the history of hobart mixers sounds very interesting. i also love the sunbeam mixmaster, had one that i bought my aunt
in 1971 using top value stamps from the grocery store as payment! it lasted over 30 years!

thanks for the tip on the shocking hazard. in this line of work (being an old appliance nut that i am) i am pretty used to getting zapped occasionally by 120 volts but i would hate to think someone would have to come in and find me dead, in the floor, killed by my little kitchanaid mixer! it would be much more dramatic to get my head stuck in the rollermatic and be pounded to death!

thanks again

Eddie, that's a nice collection you have there. Might you or other KA fans be able to advise regarding during what period the KA logo was written in a more script-like form instead of the block-type lettering we're more used to seeing?

4-C

Made in the 60's and into the early 70's. Last run models had a plastic handle. All parts are out of production with the exception of a 4 quart stainless bowl selling for $39.00. Not long ago a seller on ebay have 5 NIB bowls and they were going for lowball prices. An excellent mixer, great for cakes because of the superior aerating qualities of the all putpose beater. I keep leaning on Kitchenaid to revivie the beater for it's current models. You'll love it.

Shopkitchenaid.com

You can buy it on line at shopkitchenaid.com or from any authorized Kitchenaid service center. kitchenaid/conversations.com will send you an operator's manual free of charge. You might peruse ebay to be sure there isn't a better value.
