multi-colored HAPPY TIME 78

This is a 78 rpm record from 1962 (late, for a 78) which is British by birth, and purchased by myself on ebay a few years ago. Wanna hear it? Click the link.

Very soothing, I don't know whether to go to sleep or rollerskate! I think 78s lasted a little longer in Canada also. I'm picking albums out of my photo file, here's a goodie: Jackie Gleason's Orchestra with a Salvadore Dali cover painting on it-circa 1955.

I have two four shelf racks full of records, six crates in my spare room, and a bunch more in two other places. I need to stop. I have all my Uncle Charles' 78s and old 33s. And scads of 45s.

Here's the aftermath of the Feb. 10, '62 Wolf & Dessaur fire, chock full of Magnavoxes and electric ranges. Wolf & Dessaur was THE place to shop in Fort Wayne, IN til at least 1979.

WOW!!!!!

I didn't realize that we had any audiophiles here at "automaticwasher.org".

I mean, since when does owning an audiophile calibar audio system go hand in hand with owning a TOL Vintage (or Modern) Washer & Dryer (LOL)???

I'm thrilled that there are audiophiles here also (since I am one myself)*.

I'll be coming back and checking this thread more often as I may be still in the market for a turntable. But I will go on to say that up until last year (?), I did own a Nakamichi BX-300 3-Head/3-Motor Cassette Deck for almost 20 years, but I have since went on and purchased a Sony ES Series CD Player-Changer/Recorder.

But anyway, even though I am an audiophile (first), I still come onto "automaticwasher.org" everyday as I also love to check out all of the old (but cool) washing machines that we had a pleasure of growing up with and using in the past. My being a Kenmore fan does all but enshrine that very fact.

I would be in the market for a moderately priced, but quality Belt-Drive Turntable at this time. Let me know if any come up for me to check out.

But anyway, thanks for starting this COOL thread.

Memories of the early1960's in Fort Wayne

Wolf&Dessaur was the place to shop in Fort Wayne back in the day. My grandmother worked there from WW2 until she retired in 1969. W&D (as it was called) and Stucky Brothers were the Magnavox dealers.

I have a vivid memory of the fire. My dad drove us down there to watch, as the multi storey building was burning. In was in Feb. of 1962, and it was very cold. It was so cold the fire hoses were freezing, and that slowed the firemen down. When it was over, the huge brick building was a gutted mess. They salvaged some items for resale, and that must be when this pixs was taken.I had never seen this pixs before.
I can recall that my parents had some friends (Bob&Margie)that purchased a TOL Magnavox console stereo from the W&D fire sale. They had kids about our age, so when mom and dad visited, we would go also. I can recall that stereo in the living room of their house. It was always playing when we would visit. It had a few nicks on the front, but Bob had purchased it at a DEEP discount. I wonder if they still may have that stereo. Both my parents are gone, and Margie died several years ago. Bob still lives in the same house though. I bet that Magnavox console is still there, playing away. <:

You can click the first image under Reference URL and break the photo up in quarters and see the neat stuff up close. A large tape recorder, some portable stereos, table radios, a couple of ranges, a '62 Olds from WJGT Channel 33. Old department stores fascinate me, I've never set foot in Ft.Wayne, but I always thought it would be a fascinating place, for various reasons. Check the new washers in the Imperial thread, in 1959 in Stix, Baer & Fuller vintage photo. Great story, Rick, for the Magnavox lover in me.

Santa display

Xmas 1958, W&D

They always did Xmas right at this store, even though the owners were in fact Jewish. The whole store was decked out for the holidays.

These two pictures were taken by my grandparents in 1958.

These huge dispays were in storage for 25+ years. They were restored about 20 years ago, and are now displayed during the holidays on the side of two bank building downtown Fort Wayne. They are lit up for the first time annually on the Thanksgiving night.

Rick, that is gorgeous! When I was picking through the Fort Wayne ephemera, I read the story of the Santa Claus. I wish I knew how to get pictures of the inside of the store, someone has to have them archived. Thanks for taking the time to post those beautiful shots. There is a gigantic site with photograpic archives of J.L.Hudson, in Detroit. I'll try to post more of my Magnavoxes.

W&D Santa

Here I am in WonDerland, with the W&D Santa. Phil Stigerwald, who was the W&D santa for decades. He just passed about two years ago.

I think I have some interior pixs. I have an old book from W&D that was my grandmas, and it may have some interior shots. Will check it out when I have time, and make another thread about it.

Glad you enjoyed the stuff about F.W. Alan. I just figured you had grown up around here. How did you find out so much about F.W.?

Well, I "adopted" Fort Wayne not too many years after I started my Magnavox collection. I would pick up anything I could find about Magnavox or F.W., I found a book in a shop here in Fort Pierce about F.W., published around 1980, even that doesn't have detailed info about anything, but it did have some interior shots of Hefner Chevrolet, some downtown shots, a bit of Forest Park, and the city was also home to Capehart-Farnsworth, and over time I had picked up some postcards, one being a color one of the modern W&D building, sent to someones friend in '62. I just have this thing about places, I have also "adopted" Seattle WA, Portland OR, Lincoln, NE, Gettysburg, PA, Lancaster PA, nice places that seem to have a pride in their pasts, and don't want to erase everything that looks old or sentimental. I guess I collect places. I collect people's pasts, it just seems comforting. I am enjoying your pictures. It is nice to get a response about these things and places I love. Thank you, and neat Santa picture!

Rick on santa's lap

That is so adorable, and how gay is that coat?~!

So from where you were seated on Santa's lap you were looking all over a sea of Magnavox equipment? No wonder you became such a big enthusiast with such marvelous beginnings.

Rick lets have a look inside your Seeburg sometime, please. I've only seen yours from afar. I counted my Rock-Ola as one of my turntables to, since there are 80 vinyl records inside there and ready to go.

How many jukeboxes do we have in the group? I should expect quite a few. They are the ultimate in Automatic. If you've seen the 2003 washer convention video that jason made you may recognise my Rock-Ola Imperial.
I'll try to put a fresh photo of it up here shortly.

Meanwhile I hope you all are enjoying my phonographic transcription videos at Youtube.
Do we have any Peggy Lee fans among us? Here she is on an early 50's Decca portable radio phonograph. All that remains in my collection is this video legacy. Sold it on ebay about 5 years ago.

Rock-Ola

Bob, I still have the DVD footage of your jukebox playing. Want me to post it youtube?

I'm hoping for a Seeburg soon, but right now it's a money/space issue.

I like that video, I am a Peggy Lee fan, and I have that ten inch 33 of her singing "Why Don't You Do Right?" among other things. It seems like I also have an album of her at a disc jockey convention in Miami, 1959. Don't know where that is at the moment.
